I'm an astronomer and I think aliens may be out there – but UFO sightings aren't persuasive

If intelligent aliens visit the Earth, it would be one of the most profound events in human history.

Surveys show that nearly half of Americans believe that aliens have visited the Earth, either in the ancient past or recently. That percentage has been increasing. Belief in alien visitation is greater than belief that Bigfoot is a real creature, but less than belief that places can be haunted by spirits.

Scientists dismiss these beliefs as not representing real physical phenomena. They don't deny the existence of intelligent aliens. But they set a high bar for proof that we've been visited by creatures from another star system. As Carl Sagan said , "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

The three recent appearances (and two subsequent removals ) of " monoliths " in Romania, Utah and California are intriguing examples of what can capture the public's imagination.

These constructions are metallic-looking structures about three or four metres tall, with a simple geometric design and reflective surface.

'The Unidentified,' by Colin Dickey: An Excerpt - The New York Times

Martin Thompson, the head of Rackets for the Suffolk County's District Attorney's office, had been leading an investigation into illegal gun sales when he first learned of the plan. Listening to a wiretap of two suspects, John J. Ford and Joe Mazzuchelli, he suddenly found them talking about something very different than guns.

"Once they find this stuff, on, let's say in Tony's car, front seat," Ford is heard saying on the tape, only to be cut off by Mazzuchelli, who chimes in, "Nasty bastard glowing in the dark." Ford adds, "With this isotope, he'll start glowing in twenty- four hours."Thompson and his team had stumbled on a deeply bizarre assassination plot, one involving stolen radium, a forest fire, and a UFO cover‑up.

Winnipeg UFO expert calls alien civilization research an ‘educated guess’ - Winnipeg

The news from researchers in the U.K. that there could be more than 30 intelligent alien civilizations in our galaxy is music to the ears of a Winnipeg science writer and “weirdologist”.

Astrophysics researchers from the University of Nottingham in England have come up with new data and calculations for figuring out how many potentially contactable civilizations are out there, calculating the most likely number at 36.

Winnipeg UFO researcher Chris Rutkowksi told 680 CJOB the number is a “relatively educated guess”, but it’s impossible for us to really know what — or who — is out there.

The Dark Connection Between UFOs and Grisly Mutilations - HISTORY

The details are both grisly and strangely surgical: corpses found under the open sky with their eyes plucked out, tongues removed and private parts excised—all extracted with the utmost precision and leaving not a drop of blood.

Reports of such unexplained mutilations, carried out on both humans and animals, have baffled investigators for decades, leading to speculation about whether the perpetrators might be otherworldly beings conducting biological experiments on earth’s inhabitants. While scores of reports have emerged from U.S. western and midwestern states detailing mysterious bloodless animal mutilations, human cases have been far less common—and often much sketchier in their documentation.
