NASA's Perseverance rover is taking its own wheel for Mars drives | Space

NASA's Perseverance rover is picking up the pace on Mars thanks to technology that helps the robot avoid running into trouble on its otherworldly drives.

That technology, called AutoNav, is a navigation system that maps terrain and plans routes without the rover needing to rely as heavily on guidance from Earth.

NASA's Self-Driving Perseverance Mars Rover 'Takes the Wheel' – NASA's Mars Exploration Program

The agency’s newest rover is trekking across the Martian landscape using a newly enhanced auto-navigation system.

Mars methane mystery may be starting to clear up | Space

Since landing inside the Red Planet's Gale Crater in 2012, NASA's Curiosity rover has repeatedly detected methane — a background level of less than 0.5 parts per billion (ppb) molecules of air, with some puzzling surges up to 20 ppb.

Those measurements, made with the Tunable Laser Spectrometer (TLS) instrument in Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) chemistry lab, are intriguing to astrobiologists, because methane is a possible biosignature gas .

Sols 3167-3169: Holiday, Soliday, and Preparing To Drill! – NASA's Mars Exploration Program

On Sol 3165 Curiosity carried out a short bump to better position the rover for drilling. The bump went well and we were excited to dive straight into planning today. This plan will cover four days on Earth to account for the Independence Day holiday in the U.S.

The plan starts by taking a 360-degree Mastcam mosaic, which will be helpful for documenting this location, identifying future targets, and looking for changes during the course of the drill campaign.

Amazing New Images Show Auroras on Mars

A probe sent by the United Arab Emirates to study the Martian atmosphere has caught an exceedingly elusive event on camera, Space.com reports : a nightside aurora on Mars.

Before the Hope orbiter's formal science mission even began, one of its scientific instruments caught the aurora, which is a notoriously fleeting phenomenon that has proved to be very difficult to study.
