KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. – The world is preparing to watch four non-professionals become astronauts after launching from Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday night.
Until recently NASA hadn't launched humans from Florida since 2011 but last year, thanks to Elon Musk's company SpaceX, astronauts began launching from Kennedy Space Center once again. Now, SpaceX will try to usher in a new era of human spaceflight with the Inspiration4 mission.
Starwatch: Algol's orbiting stars add twinkle to Medusa's eye | Astronomy | The Guardian
Autumn in the northern hemisphere is a good time of the year to see Perseus in the evening sky. But rather than simply searching out the constellation, how about watching the star Algol change in brightness?
This Saturday, from the UK and Europe the star will be at its dimmest during the late evening. According to myth, Algol represents the eye of Medusa, the gorgon slain by Perseus, whose head the hero holds in his left hand.
Tracking space debris is a growing business | The Economist
AT ORBITAL SPEEDS a tennis-ball-sized piece of space junk can obliterate a satellite. It makes good sense, then, to track orbiting debris, the better to steer spacecraft away from danger.
At the moment, space-going junk is mapped mostly by radar. But of an estimated 34,000 orbiting objects ten or more centimetres across, only about 29,000 are being tracked with reasonable accuracy. Smaller pieces are harder to follow.
NASA astronaut gets extended stay in space for record-breaking 353-day mission | Space
NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei will remain on the International Space Station until March, giving him a record-setting spaceflight.
"I think all astronauts are explorers at heart," he added. "I'm looking forward to, as a human being, understanding how it feels to do something like this."
Cosmic objects with strange orbits discovered beyond Neptune | Space
These objects include four that are more than 230 astronomical units (AU) from the sun. (An astronomical unit is the distance from the Earth to the sun, about 93 million miles or 149.6 million kilometers).
The new observations come courtesy of the Dark Energy Survey, an effort to map the universe's galactic structure and dark matter that began in 2013.

The top ten free engineering math software packages
The Mars Climate Orbiter made headlines back in 1999 when it approached Mars on a trajectory bringing it too close to the planet and wound up either destroyed in the Mars atmosphere or orbiting the Sun.
Among the free alternatives with features resembling those of these commercial packages is SMath Studio . Users say it behaves much like older generations of MathCad. As do other packages in this category, SMath keeps track of units.
Over 450 more Trans-Neptunian objects were found in Dark Energy Survey data
The outer solar system is a strange place. There are things flying around that we can hardly imagine — until we find them, that is.
If New Horizons was able to find something as bizarre as Arrokoth out there, then imagine what else might randomly fly by someday. Most of these objects are creeping around beyond Neptune and are so faint that they can easily hide from most telescopes.
