Astronomers are on the hunt for the remnants of the neutron-star collision that gave Earth its precious metals.
“It was close,” the project’s lead scientist, Szabolcs Marka, who is a physicist at Columbia University, told Space.com. “If you look up at the sky and you see a neutron-star merger 1,000 light-years away, it would outshine the entire night sky.”
Marka and his colleague Imre Bartos, an astrophysicist at the University of Florida, used meteorites from the dawn of the solar system to track down the collision. They analyzed the isotopes—flavors of elements with different numbers of neutrons in their atoms—in these rocks.

Yet the wealth of data captured by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft some 34 years ago is still revealing tantalizing hints and reminding scientists of why we need to go back.
Voyager 2 flew by Uranus in 1986, and now, thanks to a little blip discovered in some data, NASA scientists know it also flew through a plasmoid. A plasmoid is a giant magnetic bubble that likely pinched off part of the planet's atmosphere, sending it out into space.
They found it while looking through old data to find questions they wanted to answer on future potential missions to Uranus.

Effects of coronavirus spread to solar system as space missions put on standby | Euronews
Spacecraft flying around Mars and on their way to the Sun are being placed on standby as the effects of the coronavirus pandemic spread into the solar system.
The spacecraft have not caught any kind of interplanetary bug, but the European Space Agency (ESA) has been forced to focus efforts on the most pressing activities, and wind down everything else.
ESA Director General Jan Wörner told Euronews the agency had seen coronavirus "coming towards us like a tsunami", and had moved into teleworking mode over two weeks ago. ESA normally has around 5,000 staff across its key sites in Germany, France, Spain and Italy, but now has fewer than 100 on site. ESA has around 50 cases of coronavirus among its staff, according to Wörner.
