The New York Academy of Sciences to host programs on the science and law of Lunar Exploration

This program will discuss NASA’s Artemis mission to orbit and then land on the lunar surface. Participants will explore scientific goals, and how establishing a more permanent human presence at the moon may serve as a stepping-stone to Mars. Speakers will also discuss how we establish international legal agreements “off-planet.”

This symposium will present research on gene editing and synthetic biology that may be used to overcome human limitations during long term spaceflight. The keynote speaker will be Anousheh Ansari of the XPRIZE Foundation.

HPU Student Produces Movie About Space Flight | High Point University | High Point, NC

Grey Rich, a sophomore media production and entrepreneurship major at High Point University, made a movie titled "Dream, Above and Beyond" that will be released for purchase on Dec. 10.

Rich started the "Dream, Above and Beyond" project in October 2018 when he thought it would be a novel. After some thought, Rich favored the idea of producing a feature-length movie.

* * *

"I was inspired to make this movie based on my passion for space travel," says Rich. "The support of my little cousins, Ansley and Addyson, and my high school friend, Maddie Rice, really helped pull this idea together. I also had the pleasure to meet astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin back in 2009 when he was HPU's Commencement speaker, and I learned a lot about space at that time. They were credited as the main inspirations for this movie."

Studies offer tips on lessening spaceflight-related risk | Cornell Chronicle

The Earth's atmosphere, featuring the aurora borealis, is pictured from the International Space Station.

Space travel, illnesses like COVID-19 and climbing Mount Everest can trigger the body's stress response systems in similar ways, according to new studies by Weill Cornell Medicine, space agencies and other investigators.

The discoveries , including new maps of the abundance of mutations and immune changes found in blood cells during spaceflight, may lead to new ways to protect space travelers. They may also provide insights on caring for Earth-bound patients with illnesses that trigger similar physiological responses.

US Space Force and NASA Looking to Privatize Nuclear Spacecraft Production

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / December 7, 2020 / US Nuclear (OTCQB:UCLE) is the prime contractor to build MIFTI's fusion generators, which could be used in the relatively near future to power the propulsion systems for space travel and provide plentiful, low-cost, clean energy for the earth and other planetary bases once our astronauts get to their destination, be it the moon, Mars, Saturn or beyond.

The US Energy Secretary, Dan Brouillette, recently said, "If we want to engage in outer space, or deep space as we call it, we have to rely upon nuclear fuels to get us there… that will allow us to get to Mars and back on 'one tank of gas'." This is made possible by the large energy density ratio which makes the fuel weight for chemical fuels ten million times higher than the fuel that powers the fusion drive.

Space Is Radioactive: Dealing With Cosmic Rays | Hackaday

Outer space is not exactly a friendly environment, which is why we go through great lengths before we boost people up there. Once you get a few hundred kilometers away from our beloved rocky planet things get uncomfortable due to the lack of oxygen, extreme cold, and high doses of radiation.

Especially the latter poses a great challenge for long-term space travel, and so people are working on various concepts to protect astronauts’ DNA from being smashed by cosmic rays. This has become ever more salient as NASA contemplates future manned missions to the Moon and Mars. So let’s learn more about the dangers posed by galactic cosmic rays and solar flares.

Virgin Galactic Unveils Its Crew Uniforms Days Ahead of New Space Flight | Travel + Leisure

Virgin Galactic is proving that not only will its commercial space program be awesome, but that the outfits worn by its passengers and crew will be out of this world, too.

On Friday, Virgin Galactic shared the admittedly cool spacesuits its pilots will wear when they fly passengers, which they call “private astronauts,” on their upcoming space flights.

The suits were designed in collaboration with Virgin Galactic’s Technical Spacewear Partner, Under Armour. According to Virgin Galactic, the design teams followed a brief to create a “non-pressurized spacesuit, which not only aesthetically conveys the pilots’ role in Virgin Galactic’s mission,” but one that was also practical in supporting the pilot’s unique needs when flying at more than three times the speed of sound.
