North America Will Get A ‘Perfect’ View Of This Week’s Full ‘Wolf Moon.

The first full Moon of 2021 is almost here. On Thursday, January 28, 2021, sky-watchers will be treated to a full "Wolf Moon" rising in the east.

It will be the highest full Moon of the year, though the rising of all full Moons is always a monthly highlight. That perhaps goes double at the moment given stay-at-home orders across the globe.

After all, watching a full Moon appear in the east is not only beautiful, but it's free, and can be viewed for just a few minutes if you know exactly when to be outside. Its permanence, its power and unending rhythms are a source of stability in uncertain times.

We recently asked you what questions you'd like us to answer this year , and we loved all of your submissions, from the nitty gritty of vaccine distribution to the latest in local developments . Today, we're answering a question from reader AK M. about a galactically-inspired, locally relevant topic : Moon Trees .

* * *

"A variety of tree seeds were taken on the Apollo 14 flight to the moon and then the seeds were planted in the US and around the world . Two sycamore trees from these seeds are noted as being planted in WNC – one at the UNC Asheville Botanical Gardens and one at the Cradle of Forestry . What can you find out about these trees?"

Mischief under the harvest moon | Sampson Independent

After another long week of book learning followed by an evening of play, we were all tucked in bed for the night with the harvest moon shining through the window.

However, my brother and I, with twin beds setting side by side in our spacious room, were doing anything but sleeping.

* * *

“Vroom! Vroom!” muttered the brown hair freckle-faced lad as he pushed the plastic toy back and forth across the top of his bed.

Most ferocious full moon of the year peaks Thursday - pennlive.com

Native Americans knew the first full moon of the year as the Full Wolf Moon. Ria Sopala | Pixabay photo illustration

The full moon of January, which peaks at 2:18 p.m. Thursday, January 28, this year, was one of the least welcome of all the full moons to Native Americans and early European colonists. It arrives during the harshest, most unforgiving time of the year.

They knew it as the Full Wolf Moon because of the packs of hungry wolves that patrolled just outside the protection of the village.

The moon that made Saturn a pushover : Research Highlights

Saturn (left) might have the migration of its moon Titan (right) to thank for its conspicuous tilt. Credit: Mark Garlick/Science Photo Library

* * *

Saturn is tilted with respect to its orbit around the Sun, by a little bit more than Earth is. Planetary scientists had thought that Saturn acquired its tilt more than 4 billion years ago, thanks to the gravitational influence of Neptune.

But recent measurements made with NASA's Cassini spacecraft show that Titan is moving relatively rapidly away from Saturn. Melaine Saillenfest at the Paris Observatory and her colleagues capitalized on that finding to suggest that Titan is to blame for Saturn's tilt.

Animated musical 'Over the Moon' casts Asian American talent - Los Angeles Times

Meanwhile, Chou pursued longtime Disney animator Glen Keane and his producing partner, Gennie Rim, for the project. Rim said it took dogged determination from Chou to get them involved:

* * *

"Over the Moon" wasn't originally a musical. Once Keane and Rim were onboard, they pitched Wells the notion of turning it into one, and the thing took off like, you know, a rocket.

The filmmakers brought on composers Chris Curtis, Marjorie Duffield and Helen Park and somehow got them to work together despite their different styles and backgrounds (Curtis and Duffield were already collaborators). "Come on, guys, this sounds fun, right?" — at least, that's how Rim described Keane's pitch to them.

The surface of the moon is a galactic time capsule | Space

Its surface has been completely exposed to vacuum for almost 4.5 billion years; meanwhile, it has been soaked by particles from the sun and beyond the solar system. Those particles remain, buried under the lunar surface, providing a detailed record of the history of our solar system and even our entire galaxy.

* * *

Besides light, our sun is constantly emitting a steady drizzle of high-energy particles, collectively known as the solar wind . The solar wind is made of mainly electrons and protons, but the occasional heavy nucleus also slips out of the sun's gravitational embrace.
