The Rise and Fall of the Riskiest Asteroid in a Decade – “I’ve Never Seen Such a Risky Object”

For a few tense days this January, a roughly 70-meter asteroid became the riskiest observed in over a decade. Despite the Moon’s attempt to scupper observations, the asteroid is now known to be entirely safe.

Initial observations of an asteroid dubbed ‘2022 AE1’ showed a potential Earth impact on July 4, 2023 – not enough time to attempt deflection and large enough to do real damage to a local area should it strike.

Space junk on 5,800-mph collision course with moon | PBS NewsHour

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The moon is about to get walloped by 3 tons of space junk, a punch that will carve out a crater that could fit several semitractor-trailers.

The leftover rocket will smash into the far side of the moon at 5,800 mph (9,300 kph) on Friday, away from telescopes’ prying eyes. It may take weeks, even months, to confirm the impact through satellite images.

5020 is 41 years old today! | Kern Valley Sun

On March 2, 1981, sitting in his observatory, which happens to be the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii, a man named Schelte John Bus saw something out of the corner of his lens that he thought interesting. 

He was focused on the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter, when he saw a tiny spec of something go whizzing by, between the two mega planets. It was no bigger than a gnat's ear, but it was brilliant. Brighter than anything he'd seen that night anyway.
