There are more than 5,000 confirmed planets beyond our solar system, NASA says | WYPR

These so-called exoplanets include rocky worlds roughly the size of Earth, gas giants larger than Jupiter and "mini-Neptunes."

Astronomers discovered the first exoplanets by using the "wobble" method of tracking the subtle teetering of a star caused by the gravitational pulls of orbiting planets.

Sounds in space: What noises do planets make? | Space

In 2022, people on Earth were able to hear the planetary sounds of Mars thanks to two microphones installed on board NASA's Perseverance rover. The audio clips of these sounds in space captured range from a gust of Martian wind to the snapping sound of the rover’s laser hitting a rock.

According to NASA , these sounds are subtly different from what you would hear on Earth , being quieter and more muffled due to the lower density and different composition of the Martian atmosphere .

The planetary odometer turned on March 21, with the latest batch of 65 exoplanets – planets outside our immediate solar family – added to the NASA Exoplanet Archive .

The 5,000-plus planets found so far include small, rocky worlds like Earth, gas giants many times larger than Jupiter, and “hot Jupiters” in scorchingly close orbits around their stars.

Astronomers use new method to locate 'Star Wars'-like planets with two suns

Cosmic Collisions Yield Clues about Exoplanet Formation - Scientific American

Some of the best movies are origin stories. When we know where a superhero is coming from, then we can understand why they do what they do. The same goes for planets: knowing how they formed is key in understanding their internal structure, geology and climates.

But what about the thousands of planets we’ve found around other stars; did they form like Earth? Answering this question may seem hopeless because we’ll never have rocks from those planets to analyze.

Nasa spots chaotic aftermath of COLLISION between two planets in rare discovery

Scientists estimate that the two objects involved in the space crash were at least the size of dwarf planets.

Space collisions are common in planet formation - it's how the Moon was created and developed its orbital relationship with Earth.

This is the first observation of its kind to come from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The space agency released a depiction of the collision over the weekend.
