The comet is an alien intruder from another star system. But 2I/Borisov, the second known interstellar visitor after far smaller 'Oumuamua , discovered in 2017, looks remarkably like a normal comet from our own Solar System: an object a few kilometers across spewing carbon monoxide gas, water vapor, and dust. Researchers who announced their analysis this week say the size of the two objects, along with the rate of their discovery and other factors, suggests that at any given moment more than a dozen interstellar visitors at least as large as 'Oumuamua are passing through the Solar System.
"Our current telescopes are not powerful enough to detect all of these objects," says Bryce Bolin, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and lead author of the new study! But in the future, he says, large telescopes will be able to catch these visitors more often, perhaps two or three times a year.

That Interstellar Comet Is Carrying Water From Beyond Our Solar System
Available evidence points to there being a lot of water out there in the Universe, beyond the Solar System! 7:48 Comet BORISOV is our second interstellar visitor, is it TRANSMUTATING elements in the COMA? YouTube!! Detecting it and studying it, however, is not exactly easy - unless the water comes to us. Now, some of it has, carried in on a comet from light-years away.
According to a new analysis of 2I/Borisov, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters and uploaded to pre-print resource arXiv , the interstellar comet is outgassing water vapour.
This, in turn, provides information about the comet's nucleus, the volatile elements and compounds it's spewing, and the circumstellar disc from which it originated.
"Comets have a primitive volatile composition that is thought to reflect the conditions present in their formation region in the protosolar disc. This makes studies of cometary volatiles powerful for understanding the physical and chemical processes occurring during planet formation," the researchers wrote in their paper , which is yet to be reviewed.

Analysis: The latest discovery that Hygiea is a dwarf planet is a reminder of the unfathomable vastness of the cosmos, says Andrew Griffin

But it is a reminder that our Solar System is still unexplored. Our neighbourhood might seem finished, but it is filled with worlds that might or might not exist, and rocks that could turn out to actually be dwarf planets.
This is summed up by lead researcher Pierre Vernazza from the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille in France, who made it clear that without powerful telescopes like the one used in this study, astronomers would not know the finer details of the region of space that surrounds the Earth.

In a Distant Galaxy, Colliding Exoplanets Are Upending What We Knew About Solar System Formation
"This is a rare opportunity to study catastrophic collisions occurring late in a planetary system's history," Alycia Weinberger, a staff scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., and author of a recent paper on the collision, said in a statement .
Clouds of dust are ubiquitous in space. Planets form when the dust particles floating around young stars clump together and grow over millions of years into large, gravitationally dense objects. By the time planets settle into their orbits around a star, much of the smaller particles of dust and debris in the environment have either been pulled into the star as fuel, or swept away by solar winds into a ring of schmutz on the solar system's cold outer edges.
Our solar system's frigid Kuiper Belt , which stretches for hundreds of millions of miles beyond the orbit of Neptune and contains thousands of rocky objects (including the dwarf planet Pluto), is a prime example of this. The dust, asteroids and planetoids out there are extremely cold, due to their distance from the sun.
NASA Needs to Update Its Rules to Keep Our Solar System Clean
NASA published a response to the Planetary Protection Recommendations, and aims to rethink its approach to ensure cleaner and safer missions.
NASA has been following the same guidelines to prevent contamination spreading from space onto our planet for the past 50 years.

Planetary protection is meant to prevent or minimize biological contamination in our solar system. The aim is to limit the number of microbes we send into space and to other planets, so as to ensure we're able to study these areas in their natural habitats.
It's not all about protecting other planets and studies in space, though. Planetary protection is also meant to protect our Earth from outside contaminants.
Tune into the Planetary Protection Independent Review Board teleconference as they discuss findings and recommendations to protect the solar system from contamination as the face of #space exploration changes - TODAY at 3:30pm EDT https://t.co/tFtuz6OTqI via @NASA pic.twitter.com/cjxOOCgWhW
