Alien comets may be common, object from beyond Solar System suggests | Science | AAAS

The comet is an alien intruder from another star system. But 2I/Borisov, the second known interstellar visitor after far smaller 'Oumuamua , discovered in 2017, looks remarkably like a normal comet from our own Solar System: an object a few kilometers across spewing carbon monoxide gas, water vapor, and dust. Researchers who announced their analysis this week say the size of the two objects, along with the rate of their discovery and other factors, suggests that at any given moment more than a dozen interstellar visitors at least as large as 'Oumuamua are passing through the Solar System.

"Our current telescopes are not powerful enough to detect all of these objects," says Bryce Bolin, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and lead author of the new study! Hygiea May Be Our Solar System's Next Official Dwarf Planet

New observations with ESO's SPHERE instrument on the Very Large Telescope have revealed that the ... [+] surface of Hygiea lacks the very large impact crater that scientists expected to see on its surface.

Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile have made very high-quality images of Hygiea and say it really should be classified as our solar system's fourth and smallest dwarf planet.

Using the VLT's sphere visible and near-infrared high-resolution imaging instrument, the international team, led by Pierre Vernazza was able to analyze and conduct simulations of observations taken over 12 nights during 2017 and 2018. Their findings of the least imaged large asteroid in the Main Asteroid Belt were published this week in the journal Nature Astronomy.

ESO says Hygiea satisfies three of the four requirements to be classified as a dwarf planet: it orbits around the sun, it is not a moon and, unlike a planet, it has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit! 7:48 Comet BORISOV is our second interstellar visitor, is it TRANSMUTATING elements in the COMA? By analysing the light spectrum from the comet, the researchers were able to deduce that the reflection was consistent with something containing water particles.

The team wrote in the research paper published in the journal arXiv: “Comets have a primitive volatile composition that is thought to reflect the conditions present in their formation region in the protosolar disc.

For decades, scientists have pointed Earthly lenses toward the sky to capture images of the cosmos. Even the earliest rockets that launched off the planet brought cameras into space. 

At first, our photos of the solar system came back grainy, unclear, and colorless. The very first image taken in space, for example, came from a 33mm motion-picture camera that American scientists strapped to a captured German rocket and launched off Earth at the end of World War II. The camera fell back to Earth and shattered, but the film survived.

Other early solar-system images came as NASA and the Soviet Union explored the moon for the first time — people born in the 1950s and 60s grew up with the iconic photos of the first astronauts walking on the moon.

Since then, increasingly sophisticated missions have ventured farther into space with better and better cameras! In that context, the discovery that Hygiea – previously thought to be an asteroid at the edge of our Solar System, but in fact possibly a dwarf planet – can seem a little small scale. It is only tiny, and is relatively close by, even if that means hundreds of millions of miles.

But it is a reminder that our Solar System is still unexplored. Our neighbourhood might seem finished, but it is filled with worlds that might or might not exist, and rocks that could turn out to actually be dwarf planets.

This is summed up by lead researcher Pierre Vernazza from the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille in France, who made it clear that without powerful telescopes like the one used in this study, astronomers would not know the finer details of the region of space that surrounds the Earth.

Student makes Butte-sized solar system model

BUTTE - A student at Silver Bow Montessori School is building a map of the solar system that is as big as Butte.

Fourth grader Jackson Kinzer designed the model to scale so the planets in the solar system will be at different locations around Butte, with the sun being at the Montessori school. Students placed Neptune at the Butte Library.

"It's called the windiest planet because there's so much wind and it was named after the god Neptune because it's blue like the sea," said Kinzer.
