Physicist Renato Renner at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and his collaborators wanted to design an algorithm that could distill large data sets down into a few basic formulae, mimicking the way that physicists come up with concise equations like E = mc 2 . To do this, the researchers had to design a new type of neural network, a machine-learning system inspired by the structure of the brain.

Four years after a spacecraft flew by Pluto, sending stunning images and data back to Earth, NASA has commissioned a study to explore spending even more time examining and exploring the dwarf planet.
The San Antonio-based Southwest Research Institute announced Wednesday it had received funding from NASA to study the feasibility and cost of a possible future Pluto orbiter mission.
The study will build on the success of the agency’s New Horizons mission, a space probe that launched in 2006. It was the first of its kind to get a close look at Pluto and its five moons, about 3 billion miles from Earth.

Officials said the Air Force's X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle Mission 5 successfully landed early Sunday morning at Kennedy Space Center .
The spaceplane was used to improve technology that allows scientists and engineers to recover experiments tested in a long-duration space environment.

After its capture this morning at 4:10 a.m. EST, the Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft was bolted into place on the International Space Station's Earth-facing port of the Unity module at 6:21 a.m. At the time of installation, Cygnus was flying over the south Pacific.

Bad Astronomy | Could TESS have already seen Planet Nine?
This is an interesting question! TESS is the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite , which scans the sky looking for dips in starlight when planets pass in front of their host stars . To do that it looks at gigantic chunks of the sky all the time , so it sees lots of different things, not just clues of the existence of exoplanet. So if there's a big icy object orbiting our own Sun out past Neptune, could TESS see it?
A normal first reaction would be no way. These objects are far, far too faint to see. But in a new paper just published some astronomers show how it could be done.

Dimly lit by a far distant sun, a planet much larger than Earth may orbit in the vast outer reaches of the solar system, eluding our telescopes for more than 400 years. But its presence may leave telltale traces. And as new and more powerful probes join our space exploration armada , even the immensity of space may no longer afford Planet X a hiding place.
The evidence for Planet X, also called Planet Nine, remains circumstantial. The outer reaches of the solar system are a frontier that we are only just beginning to explore.
Deep space wine: Bordeaux blasts off into orbit
T he International Space Station will be the first wine cellar in space after a dozen bottles of soon to be space-aged Bordeaux were launched into orbit.
The 12 bottles of Grand Cru, packed in protective metal containers, docked at the International Space Station after being rocketed into space by NASA.
The wine will be aged in space for a year before splashing back down to Earth for tests. Researchers will compare the outer space case with another 12 bottles from the same batch that remained on the planet.
