Y ou'd think that if you found the first evidence that a planet larger than the Earth was lurking unseen in the furthest reaches of our solar system, it would be a big moment. It would make you one of only a small handful of people in all of history to have discovered such a thing.
But for astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC, it was a much quieter affair. "It wasn't like there was a eureka moment," he says. "The evidence just built up slowly."

Scientists spot promising super-Earth planets just 11 light-years away | Fox News
A team of German astronomers has discovered two super-Earths near the red dwarf star Gliese 887 and just a short 11 light-years away from Earth .
Super-Earths are planets with a mass greater than Earth's, but less than those of the ice giants Uranus and Neptune. The two exoplanets -- or planets located outside of our solar system -- were named Gliese 887b and Gliese 887c, respectively.

Colorado Skies: Look for Saturn and Jupiter in July – Loveland Reporter-Herald
July's Colorado sky sees Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets in the solar system, enter the pre-midnight evening sky side by side for the first time in 20 years.
As these planets plod along in their respective orbits around the sun, every 20 years or so the faster moving planet Jupiter gradually catches up to and passes the slower moving planet Saturn in the night sky.
Over the next several months, the two planets will appear side by side on the Sagittarius-Capricornus border.

Super-puff worlds: These Jupiter-sized planets are light as cotton candy
Astronomers once believed that most solar systems would be much like our own, with small rocky planets near their sun, accompanied by gas giants orbiting the star at greater distances. Beginning in 1992, researchers began to find worlds orbiting alien stars, and soon found solar systems came in a wide variety of formations.
Today, astronomers know of more than 4,000 worlds orbiting other stars. Of these, 15 have exceedingly low densities, lower than that of cotton candy.
