Searching for Guardian: Filmmaker re-examines mystery of Carp UFO sighting | Ottawa Citizen

Who was "Guardian" — the person whose blurry videotape of strange flashing lights in a field near Carp more than 30 years ago lured UFO researchers and TV crews to West Carleton like conspiracy theorists to an Area 51 picnic.

It's the question Toronto filmmaker Nick Crowe plans to explore when he visits the area next month to film a documentary on the events of the fall of 1989 for CBC's Point of View. The film, Searching for Guardian, is looking at the eye witness reports of a purported spacecraft landing and lurid claims of aliens who worked with the Nazis and planned to enslave humans.

Bill Knight: Remembering ‘classic’ cinema aliens - News - The Register-Mail -

This week 73 years ago, the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico issued a press release saying that its 509th Operations Group had recovered a "flying disc" that had crashed nearby. Coming weeks after a pilot reported flying saucers near Mt. Rainier southeast of Tacoma, Wash., it fueled public interest – which Hollywood was happy to exploit.

Most know memorable movies about aliens, but many are relatively recent: "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Independence Day." All spark feelings of exhilaration, fear or suspicion, emotions used by directors for decades, especially in the 1950s, when flying saucers and propaganda about Communist infiltration set the cultural tone as much as rock ‘n’ roll and Ike.

Perhaps the most famous UFO report in the county came in 2000 when Sharon Rowlands used her camcorder to film a huge craft above her house one October night.

Her video was classed by some alien experts as 'one of the most important pieces of footage ever taken' and Sharon reportedly sold it to an American producer for £20,000.

In case you are keeping track:

Study suggests alien civilisations similar to Earth’s are few and very far between –

Considering stars with metal content similar to the Sun’s and a roughly 5-billion-year timescale similar to the time needed by humanity to reach its current level of technology, the researchers conclude there should be about 36 “active civilisations” across the Milky Way.

As for Fermi’s famous question, the researchers say the average distance between those civilisations would be about 17,000 light years, making detection and communication extraordinarily difficult using current technology.

Navy pilot who took Pentagon UFO video doesn't want link to aliens - Business Insider

"At no point did I want to speculate as to what I thought this thing was — or be associated with, you know, 'alien beings' and 'alien aircraft' and all that stuff," Underwood told the magazine. "It is just what we call a UFO. I couldn't identify it. It was flying. And it was an object. It's as simple as that."

Before Underwood spotted the flying object, he said, he received a tip from his commanding officer that there might be something strange in the sky. A few days earlier, a guided-missile cruiser called the USS Princeton had been tracking about eight to 10 mysterious flying objects near the Catalina and San Clemente islands in California.

True alienation: when a person of color tries to fit in with UFO enthusiasts | World news | The

The talk with the older student validated a curiosity first sparked by a walk to school about five years prior. On an empty road in Cristo Rey, a lower-middle class, industrial neighborhood in Santo Domingo, a ball of light the size of a car tire appeared about 80 to 100 feet above him. It pulsated, moved steadily, horizontally, away from him, then vanished.

"I was paralyzed for like 30 seconds. I didn't understand what it was. I was so scared," he told me. "I didn't tell anyone because no one would have believed me." He marks that day as one that changed him forever. "I started looking up all the time, looking at the sky," he said.
