Other names for August's full Moon include the "Green Corn Moon," "Barley Moon," "Wheat Cut Moon," "Blueberry Moon" and "Blackberry Moon"—all references to harvest times for crops.
Whatever you call it, the full Moon's rise and set took place close to sunset and sunrise, respectively, and was captured around the world in some stunning photographs.

"We can find lava tubes on planet Earth, but also on the subsurface of the Moon and Mars according to the high-resolution pictures of lava tubes' skylights taken by interplanetary probes. Evidence of lava tubes was often inferred by observing linear cavities and sinuous collapse chains where the galleries cracked," explains Francesco Sauro. "These collapse chains represent ideal gateways or windows for subsurface exploration.
"We measured the size and gathered the morphology of lunar and Martian collapse chains (collapsed lava tubes), using digital terrain models (DTMs), which we obtained through satellite stereoscopic images and laser altimetry taken by interplanetary probes," reminds Riccardo Pozzobon. "We then compared these data to topographic studies about similar collapse chains on the Earth's surface and to laser scans of the inside of lava tubes in Lanzarote and the Galapagos.

The Moon was near Jupiter and Saturn over the weekend. On Aug. 3, the full moon will rise along with Jupiter and Saturn. They will be lined up all in a row. Jupiter will rise first followed quickly by Saturn. The two planets will only be about 8 degrees apart. The full moon will follow the planets in the summer sky.
You can view them in the southeast sky between 9 and 9:30 p.m. Look for Jupiter and Saturn above and to the right of the moon. Jupiter is the brighter of the two. They are visible through the early morning hours — look for them high in the southern sky around midnight and then watch it start to set in the southwest abound 2:30 a.m.

Francesco Sauro is a speleologist and head of the ESA programmes CAVES and PANGAEA, he is also a professor at the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Bologna. Riccardo Pozzobon is a planetary geologist at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua.

University of Texas students' idea: Carving images on the moon | Business |
A group of University of Texas students have a vision that could — at least in theory — make that a possibility someday.
The 10 UT engineering students devised a business plan to turn the idea into a moneymaker — and won awards for it at a NASA competition.
They pitched and provided the plan for building a rover that would carve messages or images onto the moon and capture pictures of those etchings, which in turn could be used for merchandising. While not visible from Earth, the etchings are intended to be permanent, the students said.
