The intense gravity of a black hole curves spacetime, acting as a magnifying glass and causing the black hole shadow to appear larger. By measuring this visual distortion, the research team found that the size of the black hole shadow corroborates the predictions of general relativity. A test of gravity at the edge of a supermassive black hole represents a first for physics and offers further proof that Einstein’s theory remains intact even under the most extreme conditions.

From our single vantage point in the cosmos, it's really hard to understand three-dimensional space.
We can easily map stars into constellations in relation to each other, but knowing which are closer and which are further away is a lot harder to measure.
One way to determine the distance to objects in space is by using standard candles - objects of known intrinsic brightness. Astronomers measure the difference between how bright the object actually is, and how bright it appears to us light-years away, and use that difference to calculate how far the light has travelled.

Einstein's general theory of relativity has triumphed once again after being tested in the strongest gravitational field to date. Dimitrios Psaltis at the University of Arizona and members of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration did their analysis using recent images of M87*, which is a supermassive black hole at the centre of a nearby galaxy. Their results set the stage for even more stringent tests of general relativity in the near future.
For over a century, general relativity has had an excellent track record in explaining observations of the universe. All the same, the theory leaves some big questions unanswered: including how to unify gravity with quantum mechanics and the surprise discovery in 1998 of the universe's accelerating expansion. As a result, physicists are looking for subtle flaws in general relativity that could lead to the development of a more complete theory.

"We performed simulations of black-hole collisions using supercomputers and then compared the rapidly changing shape of the remnant black hole to the gravitational waves it emits." Christopher Evans, co-author and graduate student from the Georgia Institute of Technology, said in a statement. "We discovered that these signals are far more rich and complex than commonly thought, allowing us to learn more about the vastly changing shape of the final black hole."

STOCKHOLM/BERLIN (Reuters) - Three scientists who unravelled some of the deep mysteries of black holes, the awe-inspiring pockets of the universe where space and time cease to exist, have won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Britain's Roger Penrose, professor at the University of Oxford, won half the prize of 10 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million) for his proof that black holes are a direct consequence of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity.
