His Writing Radicalized Young Hackers. Now He Wants to Redeem Them | WIRED

In the first Little Brother installment, which Doctorow published in 2008, the answer seemed righteously inevitable: The hero uses his hacker skills to fight back.

The first person to tell me about Little Brother was John Gilmore, cofounder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and of the original Cypherpunks , the 1990s techno-libertarian group that coined the term.

In 2009, Freitas put Little Brother on the reading list for a class he taught at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program. This starts an infection chain which creates multiple backdoors into compromised systems, as well as the ability to grab admin credentials and move laterally across networks.

But now FIN11 is using its extensive network as means of delivering ransomware to compromised networks, with the attackers favouring Clop ransomware and demanding bitcoin to restore the network.
