Sampling the Early Solar System | Science

Our knowledge of the Solar System has been greatly advanced by exploration with robotic spacecraft, but there are many limitations on the instruments those can carry. More detailed information can be extracted by analyzing samples of Solar System bodies in Earth laboratories. Meteorites provide some natural samples, but the body they came from is often unknown, and they may not represent typical material.

Scientists have now discovered over four thousand exo-planets. These are planets that revolve around stars other than the sun. Most have been found using a method called 'transit'. Very precise telescopes, primarily one on the Kepler spacecraft, look for tiny regular variations in a star's brightness, which indicates a planet passing in front of it.
The 'transit method', as this is called, is nothing new. Astronomers have observed both Mercury and Venus moving in between the Earth and sun for hundreds of years. They appear as small black circles moving across the surface of the sun. When they do, the sun's brightness decreases a slight amount. Using some fairly straight foreword mathematics, scientists can use this information to get an accurate approximation of the planet's size and mass and distance from the star.

Solar systems are predominantly installed on rooftops in urban settings, where open land is scarce but multi-level buildings are aplenty. Often, the roof space on these structures isn't large enough to host solar systems that can cover a building's entire energy footprint, so they're supplemented with renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by out-of-city solar systems.

Every planet in our Solar System will be visible in the sky this month, and you can observe most of them without binoculars or a telescope.
Venus and Mercury can be viewed just before dawn, while Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars will be brightest in the evening sky. Using a telescope, you can spot Uranus and Neptune during the evening as well.
Jupiter and Saturn will appear to have a close encounter on the sky’s dome, known as a great conjunction, on December 21, 2020. According to EarthSky , great conjunctions of these two worlds occur every 20 years, but this year Jupiter and Saturn will appear closer together than they have since 1623.
