Milky Way Galaxy Hosts At Least 30 Crore Potentially Habitable Planets; Closest Around 20
How many Earth-like worlds are out there in our Milky Way galaxy? New research suggests that there are at least 30 crore potentially habitable planets scattered in our galaxy. This massive estimate is derived using the data obtained from the US space agency NASA's retired planet-hunting mission, the Kepler space telescope. The findings highlight that among the stars with similar temperature to that of our Sun, about 50% may host at least one Earth-like planet.
Moreover, as per NASA's estimates, at least four habitable planets may be located just 30 light-years of our Sun, and the closest Earth-like world is likely to be at most about 20 light-years from us.
Moon Gateway likely won't be in place to support NASA's Artemis missions, audit finds
It's unlikely NASA's orbiting gateway around the moon will be there in 2024 when the space agency plans to start sending astronauts back to the lunar surface, according to a new report from the NASA Office of Inspector General.
The lunar Gateway -- a small space station around the moon-- is a key part of NASA's Artemis program that will provide a location for spacecraft to deploy down to the surface of the moon with astronauts.
NASA's OIG is an independent organization and is performing several audits of the Artemis program. On Tuesday, the OIG released the first in a series examining the Gateway schedule, funding, costs, contract negotiations and technical risks.
SpaceX Crew Dragon rolls out to pad for Crew-1 astronaut launch for NASA | Space
The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that will carry four astronauts to the International Space Station this weekend has made it to the launch pad.
The capsule, named Resilience , and its SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket rolled out to Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida late Monday into early Tuesday (Nov. 9-10), NASA officials said.

Some important boxes need to be ticked before that can happen, however. Two of those milestones will occur today (Nov. 10), if all goes according to plan — a "static fire" of the Falcon 9, in which the rocket's engines blaze up while the booster remains tethered to the ground, and completion of the Crew-1 flight readiness review. (Update for 2:50 p.m. EST on Nov. 10: The flight readiness review is done, and launch remains targeted for Nov. 14.)

Habitable worlds orbiting Tau Ceti were destinations of fictional starships like "The Expanse"'s Nauvoo and "Barbarella"'s vessel. "Star Trek"'s Captain Picard also frequented an exotic bar in the system.
Exoplanets – worlds around other stars – have long been staples of science fiction but remained mostly inaccessible to scientific investigations. This all changed over the past decade, when NASA's Kepler and TESS exoplanet hunter space telescopes added thousands of new planets to the previously short tally of alien worlds.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA is underestimating the amount of time and money it will take to bring Mars rocks back to Earth in the coming decade, an independent panel said Tuesday.
The review board suggested that NASA and the European Space Agency consider bumping the next launches in the sample-return effort from 2026 to 2028, given all the technological challenges. These delays will increase costs, pushing the planning budget to $4 billion or more — $1 billion more than currently envisioned by NASA, the panel noted.

In 2019, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) discovered a super-Earth and two mini-Neptunes orbiting a faint, cool star about 73 light-years away in the southern constellation of Pictor. The M-type dwarf star is about 40% smaller than the Sun in both size and mass, and it has a surface temperature about one-third cooler than the Sun’s.
