Mark your calendars: The agency's latest rover has only about 8,640,000 seconds to go before it touches down on the Red Planet, becoming history's next Mars car.
A mere 100 days and 166 million miles (268 million kilometers) separate NASA's Mars 2020 mission and the Red Planet's Jezero Crater . Landing will occur on Feb. 18, 2021, at 12:43 p.m. PST (3:43 p.m. EST), with confirmation being received back at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California about 11 1/2 minutes later.

I have seen countless images of space, taken from Earth, above it, and many from spacecraft at the target destination itself: the Moon, Venus, Mars, asteroids, comets, Jupiter, Saturn... the view is always wondrous, and always at some level poetic.
But there is something also deeply profound of seeing the Earth from space, too. Certainly from low orbit, where we can see a fraction of our planet, or from higher orbit where perhaps we see it as a disk, blue and green and white.

Still, Mars is a prime target for future astronauts, even if getting to Mars and back is no easy task. Mars is relatively close to Earth, at least for an object in space. At its closest, Mars is only 62.07 million kilometers (38.6 million miles) away. That's far enough that any messages will take 20 minutes to travel back home. And a space trip would take six to nine months to get there, and another six to nine to return home.

The United Arab Emirates' first mission to Mars will reach the Red Planet on Feb. 9, 2021, Emirates government officials said Sunday (Nov. 8).
The mission's Hope orbiter should arrive at Mars in the same year as the 50th anniversary of the country's formation, UAE officials said in a statement just after Hope successfully completed its third trajectory correction.

Well… that’s certainly a bold statement. And it certainly didn’t come as much of a surprise, given that Musk has made it clear that he hopes to establish a colony on Mars someday. In addition to kick-starting the exploration of Mars, establishing a colony on the Red Planet is one of the reasons Musk started SpaceX in 2001. It is also the purpose behind the Starship and Super-Heavy launch system.
