Robots help piece together the fresco puzzles of Pompeii - La Prensa Latina Media

Rome, Sep 2 (EFE).- Artificial intelligence and robotics are for the first time being used to piece together fragments and frescos from the doomed Ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

Machines equipped with robotic arms are able to scan archaeological fragments, create a 3D digital model and organize the thousands of pieces into place, like a jigsaw puzzle, to reveal a complete picture of the Roman art blanketed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD, the archaeological park said

Tuscaloosa looks to robots for park lawn maintenance

Pending final approval by the full City Council, the robotic mowers, called "goats," will be deployed in Annette Shelby Park at first, with aspirations of moving them to other city-maintained areas, within reason.

"We would never put these mowers on the side of McFarland (Boulevard) or anything like that," said Jarrod Milligan, acting director of the city's Infrastructure and Public Services, "but we do have some areas we could strategically put them and there wouldn't be any issues."

Robots can trick us into thinking we are socially interacting and slow our reactions, scientists

It has long been known that making eye contact with a robot can be an unsettling experience. Scientists even have a name for the queasy feeling: the "uncanny valley".

A team at the Istituto Italiano Di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa has shown how a robot's gaze can trick us into thinking we are socially interacting and slow our ability to make decisions.

American Companies Rent Robots to Small Factories

Better technology and rising wages are leading an increase in sales of robots to big companies all across America. But smaller factories have shown less interest in the devices. Robots are costly purchases.

Now, some investors are supporting a financial plan for a robot pay-by-use plan. This means smaller factories could pay to use a robot when they want its service, but they would not own the device.

We're Getting Closer to Flying Humanoid Robots - IEEE Spectrum

A couple of years ago, we wrote about a bipedal robot called Jet-HR1 under development at the Guangdong University of Technology. With little foot-mounted ducted fans, Jet-HR1 could step across very wide gaps by using the thrust created by the fans to futz with its center of gravity.

This is obviously just the first tentative little airborne hop, but by the end of the video, you can see that the stabilization works pretty well. I wouldn't call it completely controllable yet, but it's tangible progress.
