Astro Bob: Keep your eye on the crescent moon | Park Rapids Enterprise

You can't go wrong following the moon. Like a good tour guide it will show you all the sights including those off the beaten track. On Wednesday, Nov. 3 at dawn, a leaf-thin crescent will appear about 3° above the planet Mercury.

Mercury and the very thin lunar crescent pair up about 3° apart 1 hour to 45 minutes before sunrise on Wednesday morning, Nov. 3 low in the southeastern sky. Fainter Spica, Virgo's brightest star, appears nearby. Contributed / Stellarium

Moon Phases May Affect Sleep Differently in Men and Women

As the moon's brightness increases daily from a new moon to a full moon, the time that it reaches its highest point in the sky also shifts from midday to near midnight. The reverse happens after a full moon, with brightness decreasing each night.

The researchers found that study participants slept a little less on nights when the moon was waxing, or brightening, compared with waning.

When to See November's Lunar Eclipse of the Beaver Moon

The beaver moon will be full on the evening of Nov. 18 and into the morning of Nov. 19. In North America, if you look high to the west at 2:19 a.m. ET, you'll also be able to see the start of a lunar eclipse.

The beaver moon won't disappear like the sun does during a solar eclipse. Instead, it will gradually darken and turn a coppery orange color. Most of the sunlight that usually illuminates the moon will be blocked, but some rays will bend around the earth and still get through.

China's fresh moon rocks are younger than the Apollo samples and no one knows why | Space

New analyses of moon rocks delivered to Earth by China's Chang'e 5 mission confirm that volcanism occurred later than previously known, but also deepen the mysteries surrounding that activity.

China's Chang'e 5 spacecraft collected 3.81 pounds (1.73 kilograms) of lunar dust and rocks from a region called Oceanus Procellarum on the near side of the moon in December 2020.

New moon meaning in astrology: How it affects us

Plant your seeds, trim your bangs, draw your bathwater and set your intentions, my babies: the New Moon is nigh.

As the name implies, the New Moon begins a fresh, month-long lunar cycle. The New Moon is followed by the two-week waxing phase, culminating in the brightest point of the cycle, the full moon, before waning back to darkness.

Sky shorts: A chance to see the Blood Moon

On that night, the sun, Earth, and moon will line up and most of the moon will move through the darkest part of Earth's shadow. 97% of the moon will be covered by the Earth's shadow.

The eclipse will occur only 1.7 days before apogee, the point in its orbit when the moon is farthest from Earth. It will take the moon longer to pass through the Earth's shadow because the moon will be apparently smaller and more distant. So, bundle up and get comfortable.
