The Chelyabinsk Meteorite May Have Been Involved in The Smash That Formed Our Moon

A meteor that exploded in the sky over Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013 could have also been somehow involved in the giant impact that formed the Moon .

This tantalizing finding comes thanks to a new way of dating collisions between rocks in space, based on microscopic analysis of minerals within meteorites.

The solar wind: how the Sun makes its own space weather

When we think of the Sun, we typically picture a glowing orb in space burning away at thousands of degrees Fahrenheit and casting light on the rest of the solar system that orbits it. But it is much more active than even that, thanks to the solar wind.

The idea of solar wind might not be intuitive at first glance, but it is one of the most fascinating features of our Sun. But what is it, and what does it mean for us here on Earth?

Newspapers around the world printed the discovery on their front pages: Astronomers had found that a red dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1 was home to a close-knit family of seven Earth-size planets. NASA announced the system Feb. 22, 2017.

TikToker reveals what could be the worst planet in the solar system | indy100

"The wind on this planet is seven times faster than the speed of sound, which means if you stood on this planet, you would be blown in circles around it as the planet moves around its star," said TikToker @astro_alexandra.

What are asteroids made of? Solar System's building blocks revealed!

Just over 12 months ago, we were sitting at Woomera, in the Australian outback, waiting for a streak of light in the sky to testify that the Hayabusa2 spacecraft had returned from its voyage to collect a little piece of a near-Earth asteroid called Ryugu.

The sample capsule was removed from the spacecraft. It was in good shape, it had not exceeded 60 degrees Celsius on reentry, and the capsule rattled when it was turned over, suggesting we did indeed have a solid sample.

Variety: Acrostic - The New York Times

The passage, which alternates references to the depths of space and the sea, is enchanting; because of the metaphors throughout, I wondered which expanse would be the actual topic until I was nearly finished.

There's also a group of clues that solve to laments, perhaps for us planet maximalists who would be happy to add to our solar system dioramas. Those clues include NO HOPERS, WHY OH WHY, DISAVOW, IMPLODE.

Florida man bought Tesla storage batteries for his solar system, pays almost nothing to FPL

Fred Closter doesn't like Florida Power & Light.

So he dropped another $16,000 on two large lithium ion batteries made by Tesla that can power the home for up to a day and a half if his panels aren't producing.

But as FPL pursues changes in state law that would let them hike fees on solar owners who use none of their electricity, Closter will likely never realize his dream of fully escaping FPL's grasp.

A New Journey Around (and Around) the Sun - Eos

The Sun is one of billions of stars forming the Milky Way, which is, in turn, one of the billions of galaxies populating the universe. Yet to us, the Sun is not simply one of many stars.

Indeed, generations of scientists, since Galileo Galilei in the 16th and 17th centuries and even before, have used observations of the Sun to investigate a large variety of astrophysical phenomena, from the formation of stars to the origins of stars' self-sustained magnetic fields.
