Hubble takes a peek at "ultra-hot" Jupiter-like planets

Why it matters: Studying the exotic weather on these uninhabitable gas giants can help researchers better understand Earth's atmosphere and the atmospheres of other potentially inhabitable terrestrial planets.

What they're saying: Figuring out how gas giants' massive atmospheres work is key to understanding the smaller atmospheres of terrestrial exoplanets, Josh Lothringer, an assistant professor at Utah Valley University and lead author of the WASP-178 b paper, said in a statement.

Webb telescope's cool view on how stars, planets form

In the last few weeks, we have been sharing some of Webb's anticipated science, beginning with the study of the first stars and galaxies in the early universe . Today, we will see how Webb will peer within our own Milky Way galaxy at places where stars and planets form.

"In the first year of science operations, we expect Webb to write entirely new chapters in the history of our origins—the formation of stars and planets.

What is a dwarf planet? | Astronomy.com

The word “planet” came from the ancient Greek words that mean “wandering star.” That makes sense, because for thousands of years, people have watched planets change position in the night sky — unlike stars, which appear fixed and unmoving to the naked eye.

What Is an Exoplanet? - NASA Explains | WOWK 13 News

(NASA) – All of the planets in our solar system orbit around the Sun. Planets that orbit around other stars are called exoplanets . Exoplanets are very hard to see directly with telescopes. They are hidden by the bright glare of the stars they orbit.

So, astronomers use other ways to detect and study these distant planets. They search for exoplanets by looking at the effects these planets have on the stars they orbit.

Vulcan planet: Vulcan, a hypothetical planet between the Sun and Mercury

For millennia, the planets visible to the naked eye—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn—filled out the solar system along with the Sun, the Moon, and Earth.

The search for the planet Vulcan in the 19th century was one of the most stubborn scientific endeavors of the era, but it's one that's been largely forgotten in modern times. What led scientists to go looking for it? Why did they think it was there? And what made them finally give up the hunt?

Digging Through Kepler Data Turns Up a Near Twin of Jupiter - Universe Today

NASA’s Kepler planet-hunting spacecraft was deactivated in November 2018, about ten years after it launched. The mission detected over 5,000 candidate exoplanets and 2,662 confirmed exoplanets using the transit method.

A team of researchers have announced the discovery of one more planet in the Kepler data, and this one is nearly a twin of Jupiter.
