Studying the Cradle of Planets with ngVLA – National Radio Astronomy Observatory

The Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) will help astronomers solve some of the greatest mysteries of modern astrophysics, including unveiling the formation of planetary systems similar to our own.

The dusty disks that orbit young stars are the cradles of planets. They form along with the star and contain tiny grains of dust floating through huge amounts of gas.

Tiny but precise: Team creates compact device to help spaceships land safely on planets

The optical microresonator built by the team is only 2 millimeters in length, compared to the velocity-monitoring tool most commonly used on spacecraft—the Fabry-Perot interferometer —which can be as long as 500 millimeters.

"Every gram of a device makes a huge difference in how much fuel I will have to have on a spacecraft and how many other items I can include as payload on that spacecraft," said SMU's Volkan Γ–tΓΌgen, one of the creators of the optical microresonator.

4 billion-year-old relic from early solar system heading our way – YubaNet
