Ukraine disrupts attempt by Russian hackers to take down energy provider – TechCrunch

The Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine (CERT-UA) has disrupted an attempt by Sandworm, a hacking group known to work for Russia’s military intelligence, to take down a Ukrainian energy provider.

The Russia-backed hacking group attempted to disconnect the unnamed provider's electrical substations using a new version of the infamous Industroyer malware, CERT-UA said in a security advisory on Tuesday.

The international operation involved agencies from the United States, including the FBI, and Secret Service, as well as law enforcement agencies from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Portugal, and Romania.

"Disruption has always been a key technique in operating against threat actors online, so targeting forums that host huge amounts of stolen data keeps criminals on their toes," said Edvardas Ε ileris, head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre.

CISA warns orgs of WatchGuard bug exploited by Russian state hackers

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has ordered federal civilian agencies and urged all US organizations on Monday to patch an actively exploited bug impacting WatchGuard Firebox and XTM firewall appliances.

"WatchGuard Firebox and XTM appliances allow a remote attacker with unprivileged credentials to access the system with a privileged management session via exposed management access," the company explains in a security advisory rating the bug with a critical threat level.

Symantec says that hackers distributed a modified version of VLC and exploited it for malware ...

The Broadcom-owned company, which makes Norton Antivirus, revealed that a group of hackers, which it claims are affiliated to the Chinese government, were conducting cyber-espionage campaigns targeting organizations across the world.

One of these tools is a modified version of the popular open source media player, VLC. Symantec's Security Threat Intelligence blog mentions the following statement.
