Look to the sky for the ‘Super Worm Moon’ this weekend

SAN ANTONIO – Keep your eyes to the sky this weekend! A 'Super Worm Moon,' which is the month of March's full moon, is set to appear Sunday night into Monday afternoon, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

The moon is expected to reach peak fullness at 12:48 p.m. Monday, March 9. The almanac says the 'Super Worm Moon' may be 'spectacularly bright' as it rises above the horizon.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the 'Worm Moon' refers to the earthworms and grubs that emerge after the winter season, which marks a sign of spring.

Jaw Dropping 4K Views of the Moon Apollo 13 Astronauts Saw on Their Perilous Journey Around the

This video uses data gathered from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft to recreate some of the stunning views of the Moon that the Apollo 13 astronauts saw on their journey in 1970.

Data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft now makes it possible to show what the Apollo 13 astronauts saw as they flew around the far side of the Moon. This video showcases visualizations in 4K resolution of many of those lunar surface views, starting with earthset and sunrise, and concluding with the time Apollo 13 reestablished radio contact with Mission Control.

Earth's new moon is drifting away from Earth - 'It's on its way out' | Science | News |

Experts noticed Earth had a small companion in its orbit last month, in what was described as a second moon, or a minimoon. When we think of Earth’s Moon, we imagine the bright white ball that helps to illuminate the night sky. However, the definition of a moon is a natural satellite that is captured by a planet’s gravitational pull.

So when experts say the Earth has more than one moon, they do not necessarily mean there are two or more of the giant white rocks in the sky.

A new moon is ‘temporarily bound to the Earth,’ but 2020 CD3 is no match for our

It was discovered in February by astronomers Kacper Wierzchos and Teddy Pruyne at the Catalina Sky Survey observatory near Tucson, Ariz., then shown to be on a chaotic orbit around the Earth as the Earth orbits the sun. That makes it a moon, a natural satellite.

“Orbit integrations indicate that this object is temporarily bound to the Earth,” reads a notice from the International Astronomical Union. “Further observations and dynamical studies are strongly encouraged.”

Worm moon set to delight skygazers

The second supermoon of the year is set to light up the night sky and delight skygazers on Monday evening.

Known as the “worm moon”, the celestial event is expected to be visible from 5.35pm after sunset as the moon rises in the east.

Royal Observatory astronomer Emily Drabek-Maunder told the PA news agency: “The March full moon is known as the worm moon, named after earthworms that emerge towards the beginning of spring as the ground thaws.

The Moon Is About To 'Eat' Mars And Some North Americans Will Feast Their Eyes On This Rare Sight

Have you ever seen a planet disappear? Look east in the early hours of Tuesday, February 18, 2020 and you may get a rare sight of Mars disappearing behind a crescent moon.

Astronomers call such an event an "occultation," and it's an unusual event. It's also an event that's not visible from most of the planet—though parts of the US, Canada, Mexico and part of Central America will get ringside seats to the strange sight.

Earth's New Mini-Moon Is Leaving Soon | Smart News | Smithsonian Magazine

Not only does Earth have a second, miniature moon, it may have been there for at least a year and nobody noticed, the Catalina Sky Survey announced late last month.

Then, astronomers around the world moved quickly to confirm it. For now, the small space rock is tracing a complex path around Earth. But experts say it could break away as soon as next week or as late as April .

“Unfortunately, we are catching this one on its way back out,” Bill Gray, whose software helped astronomers pinpoint the mini-moon’s location, tells the Atlantic ’ s Marina Koren. “It’s getting fainter. Already, it’s faint enough that if the Catalina Sky Survey looked at it now, it wouldn’t see it.”

Johnson Space Center training astronauts for missions to moon, Mars | Community Impact Newspaper

Three days after the Texas primary election March 3, Harris County Clerk Diane Trautman released a statement taking full responsibility for the long wait times that left some voters waiting in line until 1:30 a.m. the next morning.

The topic was capital improvement projects, but the homelessness problem plaguing Clear Lake and the Greater Houston area was the main focus of discussion during a town hall meeting March 5 at Space Center Houston.

A man and woman from the unincorporated area of northwest Harris County were the first to test positive for the virus.
