The supermoon on Monday (March 9) inspired some beautiful photography celebrating a close approach of the full moon to Earth.
Since the moon does not orbit our planet in a perfect circle, at times the full moon coincides with the satellite's closest approach to our planet. The full moon of March, known as the Worm Moon , arrived on Monday at 1:48 p.m. EDT (1748 GMT), and it reached perigee, its closest point to Earth, today (March 10) at 2:33 a.m. EDT (0633 GMT), nearly 13 hours later.
Quite a lot has been going on:
NASA watchdog takes aim at Boeing's SLS rocket and says Trump's moon mission could cost a
The rocket and spacecraft NASA plans to use to get astronauts to the moon could cost $50 billion, according to a government watchdog report released Tuesday — far more than the space agency had said it would need to meet a White House mandate to return to the lunar surface by 2024.
The report, by the NASA Inspector General, painted another grim picture of the troubles that have long plagued the Space Launch System rocket as Boeing, NASA's prime contractor on the rocket, struggles to get the unwieldy program under control. It said that more schedule delays were likely and that the space agency might not be able to meet the goal of landing people on the moon by 2024 or orbiting Mars by the 2030s.
This stunning 4K video re-creates Apollo 13's perilous trip around moon | Space
Astronauts aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft had survived an explosion and reduced oxygen before their next tricky venture, on April 14, 1970: a 25-minute pass by the far side of the moon, out of communication with Earth.
Now, you can see a portion of the Apollo 13 astronauts' view of the moon's far side, thanks to a new video courtesy of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).
LRO is optimized to zoom in on small targets on the surface of the moon. The spacecraft's results have been used for everything from identifying permanently shadowed water ice, for potential use in future human landing missions, to photographing Apollo landing sites from the 1960s and 1970s.

Common Moon Myths And How You Can Debunk Them
An astronomer recently discussed the most common myths about the Moon and how anyone can debunk them in the comfort of their own homes. The facts about the Moon were released following the recent appearance of the full supermoon.
Earlier this week, the supermoon known as Worm Moon made its debut. As noted by scientists, supermoon events occur when the Moon reaches its closes point to Earth, which is known as the perigee. Since the Moon is closer to Earth, it appears larger than normal.
India's Chandrayaan 2 is Creating the Highest Resolution Map We Have of the Moon - Universe
India's space organization, ISRO, launched Chandrayaan 2 to the Moon last year in July. While its lander Vikram crashed on the lunar surface on September 7, the Chandrayaan 2 orbiter continues to orbit the Moon.
The Chandrayaan 2 orbiter hosts an extensive set of instruments to map the Moon and now we get a peek at the data it has sent.
ISRO scientists had submitted a raft of initial results from the orbiter's mapping instruments to present at the flagship 51st Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in March. This is an annual conference hosted in the United States where more than 2000 planetary scientists and students from across the world attend and present their latest work. However, due to concerns about the Novel Coronavirus, the conference has been cancelled .
Ancient clam fossil reveals Earth's day was shorter 70 million years ago | Space
A 24-hour day seems so natural here on Earth , but 70 million years ago, that would have felt leisurely to creatures accustomed to making do with just 23.5.
"We have about four to five data points per day, and this is something that you almost never get in geological history," Niels de Winter, a geochemist at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the lead author of the new study, said in a statement released by the study's publisher. "We can basically look at a day 70 million years ago. It's pretty amazing."
Elon Musk Misidentifies the Moon for Mars
Elon Musk is an ambitious, confident man, and sometimes, yes, that leads him to do things like releasing an ill-advised EDM song , dancing uncouthly , and breaking his big truck . Today, it meant that he shot off a tweet in which he misidentified the moon as a planet.
Hot off the heels of some controversial tweets about Coachella "sucking" yesterday ("Was good maybe 5 or 6 years ago when you could wonder [sic] around & find great unknown bands), Musk tweeted a photo with the words "OCCUPY MARS" alongside an image of Mars, likely in response to increased coronavirus panic dominating the news. Except it wasn't Mars … it was the moon. The astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson chimed in with support that he was "all in," seeming not to notice the mistake.
