'Super Pink Moon' rises tonight! Teach your kids about the biggest full moon of 2020 | Space

NEW YORK — Tonight (April 7), if you look up at the night sky, you'll see the " Super Pink Moon ," the biggest supermoon of the year, shining big and bright.

The full moon will be at perigee-syzygy, meaning it will be closest to the Earth — 221,772 miles (356,907 kilometers) away — and the Earth, moon and sun will all align. This means that when a the moon is at perigee-syzygy, it will look larger and brighter than usual. But, because perigee-syzygy isn't that catchy, the term " supermoon " came about and this particular full moon was additionally nicknamed the "Super Pink Moon."

Mapping Out the Water on the Moon - Universe Today

In 2009, NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), the first mission to be sent by the US to the Moon in over a decade. Once there, the LRO conducted observations that led to some profound discoveries. For instance, in a series of permanently-shaded craters around the Moon's South Pole-Aitken Basin , the probe confirmed the existence of abundant water ice.

Based on the temperature data obtained by the LRO of the Moon's southern polar region, the ESA recently released a map of lunar water ice (see animation below) that will be accessible to future missions. This includes the ESA's Package for Resource Observation and in-Situ Prospecting for Exploration, Commercial exploitation and Transportation (PROSPECT), which will be flown to the Moon by Russia's Luna-27 lander in 2025.

Luna: A Play About the Moon review – science and stories in cabaret for kids | Stage | The

I s there a lunar module in your home-schooling schedule? If so, then you may like to try this fun, fact-packed cabaret for kids, which mixes science and storytelling in a series of skits with recurring scenarios. There's the werewolf who pleads to a policeman ("the moon made me do it!

There are cameos for cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to travel into space, and Michael Collins, whose account of solitude on the far side of the moon is haunting. I'm impressed by how much Hilda has learned by the end about full, new, waning and waxing moons (though she's sad to discover that one isn't made of ear wax). It's an uneven hour but you'll find melodies, mischief and plenty of lunar detail in these small steps into humankind's giant leap.

Supermoon: Partly cloudy skies predicted for tonight's full moon close encounter | NL Times

A supermoon will be visible in the Netherlands on Tuesday night, if the weather plays along. A supermoon is when the moon is close to the earth during full moon, which makes it look bigger than usual.

Popular weather website Buienradar predicts partly cloudy skies from 10:00 p.m. through dawn. But Dutch meteorological institute KNMI is more upbeat. Their scientists expect mostly clear skies, with only some patches of cloud, which are more likely to be present in the north and the east of the country.

The Moon Is Different Than Earth at Its Core | Smart News | Smithsonian Magazine

Every hero needs an origin story, and the moon —which helps regulate Earth’s climate and gives the ocean its tides—is no exception. For decades, researchers have known that the Earth and the moon are largely made of the same stuff. But now, new research shows they are more different than previously thought, giving weight to a controversial theory that the moon's origin.

Previous research had found that the moon and Earth had strangely similar levels of two kinds of oxygen atoms: a lighter version, and a heavier one with two more sub-atomic particles. (The variations are called isotopes.) The similarity was a wrench in the leading theory of the moon’s origin, but the new study, published on Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience , gives evidence that the moon’s makeup changes in layers.

Space news: How to see the April super-Moon 2020 in Australia | 7NEWS.com.au

While the kids are homeschooling, here's a great mini science excursion for them from mother nature... and you don't even need to venture very far.

On Wednesday, the Moon will put on a stunning display in the evening sky - starting at around 6 pm.

Officially known as the perigee-syzygy Moon, the 'super pink Moon' is when the full Moon is the exact opposite of the Sun, as well as at the closest position to Earth. Therefore, the Moon will look larger in the sky, especially when it rises in the east of the Australian sky.

Can the moon can make us healthier, happier, even richer? | Daily Mail Online

Many believe its powers can make us healthier, happier, even richer. Crazy? Or just what we need right now? YOU investigates

Our ancestors had calendars determined by the moon. It was the marker of the passage of time and they used its phases for gathering, sharing and ritual. We also know that the moon's gravitational pull causes the daily tides of oceans and seas and stabilises the earth's axis, creating the seasons.

* * *

The moon itself does not produce any light – instead we see a reflection of the sun on the moon's surface. This makes the moon appear to change shape in the sky on a nightly basis, when, in fact, the moon is always whole.

How And When To See 2020's Ultimate 'Micro' Moon Emerge This Week After Sunset

Each Monday I pick out the celestial highlights for the week ahead, but be sure to check my main feed for more in-depth articles on stargazing, eclipses and astronomy.

Two rare sights are on offer this week. First comes a possible peek at Mercury, which pings back and forth around the sun so quickly that it never gets far into the morning or evening sky. Secondly there's a New Moon, which itself is not rare at all, though finding it as a mere sliver just a few hours old certainly is. Binoculars at the ready—any old pair will do!
