Since before the first of the year the bright planet Venus has been dazzling the western sky, but we're approaching Venus' grand finale in our evening sky for 2020. Before saying goodbye, Venus and the planet Mercury will have a super close conjunction all this week during evening twilight in the very low western sky near the horizon. Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, isn't nearly as bright as Venus, but you should be able to easily spot it with the unaided eye.
There's also a really cool planet show going on in the early morning pre-twilight sky. Set the alarm for 4 a.m. After you shake off the cobwebs, step outside and you'll be greeted with celestial "cat's eyes" in the low south-southeast sky. The two super-bright side-by-side stars are actually the largest planets of our solar system, Jupiter and Saturn. They're the closest they've been to each other in the sky in 20 years, and as 2020 continues they'll get even closer.

The gibbous moon passes three visible planets in the early morning sky next week. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the gibbous moon appears underneath the brillant planet Jupiter. The two are in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus.
On Wednesday morning the moon has edged eastward and appears under the yellow planet Saturn. Saturn is pretty close to Jupiter. The two planets get closer as we get into summer.
On Thursday morning the moon appears farther east, this time just west of the red planet Mars. While Mars is not as bright as either Saturn of Jupiter, it is clearly distinguished by having a red color.
The two closest planets to the Sun are setting in our western sky. Take a look for the bright planet Venus appearing above the western horizon after sunset. Some distance below it is another planet, the planet Mercury. The two come close together by the end of the month.

According to The Astronomical Journal , the planet was discovered using a “microlensing” technique, a method that can detect planet- or star-sized objects regardless of how much light they emit.
“The combined gravity of the planet and its host star caused the light from a more distant background star to be magnified in a particular way,” said study lead author Antonia Herrera-Martin, from New Zealand’s University of Canterbury, to USA Today . “We used telescopes distributed around the world to measure the light-bending effect.”

Astronomers using the Subaru Telescope have determined that the Earth-like planets of the TRAPPIST-1 system are not significantly misaligned with the rotation of the star. Built by Maxar, each of the SkySat satellites weighs around 242 pounds (110 kilograms) at launch. The SkySats are about the side of a mini-refrigerator, and their optical instruments produce images of Earth with a resolution of less than 2.4 feet, or about 72 centimeters, according to Planet.
The first 15 SkySat satellites launched into polar sun-synchronous orbits and fly in in north-south paths around Earth. Sun-synchronous orbits are popular for remote sensing and environmental satellites because they allow regular imaging of the Earth’s surface with the sun at the same angle.
