Due to Mars' low temperatures and extremely dry conditions, a droplet of liquid water on its surface would instantly freeze, boil or evaporate, unless the droplet had dissolved salts in it. This brine would have a lower freezing temperature and would evaporate more slowly than pure liquid water. Salts are found across Mars, so brines could form there.
"Our team looked at specific regions on Mars -- areas where liquid water temperature and accessibility limits could possibly allow known terrestrial organisms to replicate -- to understand if they could be habitable," said SwRI's Dr. Alejandro Soto, a senior research scientist and co-author of the study. "We used Martian climate information from both atmospheric models and spacecraft measurements.

READ TO ME: A picture book for kids curious about Mars
BY: Kristin L. Gray, illustrated by Scott Magoon (Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, March 31), ages 3-7, 40 pages, $17.99 hardcover, $10.99 ebook
STORY: First thing to know: This is not a bedtime story, at least not the first time you share it with a child. It's brainy. It stimulates thought.
The current Mars rover, aka Curiosity — which is a machine, right? — has somehow become 1) very cute and 2) emotionally invested in being feted on the anniversary of Aug. 5, 2012, the day it powered up on the red planet. In other words, Curiosity wants a birthday party Aug. 5.
NASA Perseverance Mars Rover Scientists Train in the Nevada Desert – NASA's Mars Exploration
Rather than bringing a car-sized rover, the seven field team members stood in for it. Wielding cameras and portable spectrometers during simulated operations spread out over a two-week period, they received instructions from the scientists located elsewhere, just as the rover will after it lands on Feb. 18, 2021.
Like all Mars rovers, Perseverance will be run by a distributed team of scientists and engineers — some located in the operations center at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which leads the new mission, and some located at research institutions around the world. They will discuss where to go, which samples to study, and — for the first time — which rocks to collect in metal tubes for eventual return to Earth for deeper study.

Launch preparations continue for NASA’s next Mars rover – Spaceflight Now
On track for launch from Cape Canaveral in July, NASA’s Perseverance rover has been secured to its rocket-powered descent stage and back shell, part of the protective shield that will safeguard the robot when it arrives at Mars next year.
The rover was attached to its descent stage April 23 inside the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The combined descent stage and rover stack was then stowed inside the mission’s back shell, half of the aeroshell that will enclose the rover during its trip from Earth to Mars.

ALIENATING MARS: CHALLENGES OF SPACE COLONIZATION (NY ACAD OF SCI), May 12, 2020, virtual,
The New York Academy of Sciences will hold a webinar on May 12, 2020 from 7:00-8:15 pm ET to discuss “Alienating Mars: Challenges of Space Colonization.” It describes the event this way:
Copper Mountain Mesa News, May 8; Jupiter, Saturn and Mars to line up in the early morning hours
Our little community has been very warm this past week, with excessive heat warnings and temperatures in the high 90s. We had a bit of an issue with a neighborhood Airbnb, as the place was obviously rented out, despite the current order banning short-term rentals. We exchanged courteous texts and the host sent me a notice she had received from Airbnb which basically stated that as of May 1 she could start accepting guests again.
When it all becomes overwhelming, we garden and we look to the moon, sun, planets and stars for constant reassurance in the midst of all this turmoil. Our morning planets, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars line up abound 4 a.m. May 12 through 14; find the moon and just above it Jupiter shines brightest. Nearby is the ringed planet Saturn and Mars will be closest to the moon on the 14th.
