Scientists identify tiny satellite around an asteroid NASA's Lucy spacecraft will visit

NASA’s Lucy asteroid mission already faced a busy itinerary with seven different space-rock targets. Now, the team has discovered that one of those asteroids has a tiny companion.

The realization came thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope , which the team first recruited in 2018 to study a space rock called Eurybates. Like several of the other Lucy mission targets, Eurybates belongs to a group of asteroids known as Trojans, which occupy about the same orbit around the sun as Jupiter but cluster ahead of or behind the gas giant.

Largest Impact Event in Recorded History May Have Been An Iron Asteroid That Never Actually Hit

The largest impact event in recorded history may have been caused by the shock waves generated by an iron asteroid that entered the Earth’s atmosphere at a shallow angle before heading back into space, a team of Russian scientists have proposed.

The researchers say that the massive explosion associated with the event may not not have been caused by a space object that fell towards the ground, as is generally believed, potentially explaining the almost total absence of meteorite fragments on the Earth’s surface, according to a study published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society .

On May 4th, a tiny asteroid missed Earth… but just barely - India Gone Viral

Before you panic, at this diameter (about the size of a car) it wouldn’t have done any real damage even if it had hit us. But it would’ve put on a helluva show, creating an intensely luminous fireball easily brighter than the full Moon as it burned up and broke apart in our atmosphere, probably a few dozen kilometers above the Earth’s surface. It's also likely small pieces would've made it to the ground as meteorites, too.

This part made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up: For a short time, before observations had nailed down its trajectory, there was a 5% chance of impact! I know those aren't short odds — a 1 in 20 chance is pretty low † — but still that's high for an impact. Of course, like I said, even if it had hit it wouldn't have been dangerous. Just spectacular.

Japanese asteroid probe discovers space rock Ryugu made close pass of Sun

Hyderabad : Japan's Hayabusa2 asteroid probe has already accomplished a lot. After launching in 2014 and spending several years travelling to intercept the space rock known as Ryugu, it made many key observations and even took samples of the asteroid before departing and heading back to Earth.

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft built and operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), fired a 5-g metal projectile into the surface of the near-Earth asteroid Ryugu, a spinning top-shaped body with 1 km across and some 350 million km from Earth. This projectile disrupted the surface of the asteroid, allowing Hayabusa2 to capture some of the lofted material and tuck it safely away on board.

Meteorite hunting, and how to tell the difference between a space rock and an Earth rock - ABC

If you look up at the sky at night for long enough, you're nearly guaranteed to see a shooting star: a bright, fine light zipping across the sky.

Shooting stars, or meteors, are often the last we'll see of the rock that caused their bright flash in the sky as it burns up in our atmosphere.

Most of the time, the object that caused the shooting star is no larger than a grain of sand, and not much will make it to earth.

The Desert Fireball team from Curtin University have set up cameras across Australia to monitor for big meteors, fireballs, that might leave behind meteorites, to try and track them down quickly.
