Black Hole Fails to Do Its Job, Unleashing a Remarkable Torrent of Star Formation

Galaxy clusters contain hundreds or thousands of galaxies pervaded by hot, X-ray emitting gas that outweighs the combined mass of all the galaxies. Ejections of material powered by a supermassive black hole in the cluster’s central galaxy usually prevent this hot gas from cooling to form vast numbers of stars. This heating allows supermassive black holes to influence or control the activity and evolution of their host cluster.

But what happens if that black hole stops being active? The galaxy cluster SpARCS104922.6+564032.5 (SpARCS1049 for short) located 9.9 billion light-years away from Earth is supplying one answer.

Some of the most massive and distant black holes in the Universe emit an enormous amount of extraordinarily energetic radiation, called ‘gamma rays.’ This type of radiation occurs, for example, when mass is converted into energy during fission reactions that run nuclear reactors on Earth.

As a result of these collisions between light and matter, the energetic particles give almost all their momentum to the light rays and turn them into the gamma radiation that ends up reaching Earth.

More recently though, they have turned their attention to black hole known as J2157, which exists more than 12 billion light-years back in the distant universe and dwarfs the black hole at the centre of our galaxy.

According to a study published in the journal 'Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society,' this black hole feasts on a meal the equivalent of the Sun each day.

Astronomers are trying to understand how such massive black holes could evolve during the early days of the universe.

Why Can Black Hole Binaries Have Dramatically Different Masses?

On the 12th of April, 2019, the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave observatories detected the merger of two black holes. Named GW190412, one of the black holes was eight solar masses, while the other was 30 solar masses. On the 14th of August that year, an even more extreme merger was observed, when a 2.5 solar mass object merged with a black hole nearly ten times more massive. These mergers raise fundamental questions about the way black hole mergers happen.

According to current understanding, most black hole mergers should involve black holes of similar mass. They either began as a binary star system, where each star became a black hole or because of the close interaction of two massive black holes. So recently, a team looked at GW190412, hoping to understand how it occurred.

Photon rings around black holes are like film reels of the universe

Star Wars has nothing on a space opera filmed in space, by forces in space. When that breakthrough image of the M87 supermassive black hole (above) from the Event Horizon Telescope broke the internet last year, scientists were even more baffled about these collapsed stars than they were before. What was that fuzzy glowing ring around the shadow of the event horizon?

"Neglecting opacity, a telescope with the perfect resolution directed at a black hole observes an infinite number of nested images of the universe," Johnson said in a study he co-authored, which was recently published in Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics . These images arise from photons that [orbit] around the black hole on the way from their source to the [telescope]."

'A harrowing black hole of information': Some nursing homes leave families in the dark about
