The clip generated a wave of renewed enthusiasm for Anonymous, particularly among young people. Twitter accounts associated with the group saw a surge of new followers, a couple of them by the millions.
Now a new generation was eager to join. "How does one apply to be a part of Anonymous? I just wanna help out, I'll even make the hackers coffee or suttin" an activist in the United Kingdom joked on Twitter, garnering hundreds of thousands of likes and retweets.

Hackers Tell the Story of the Twitter Attack From the Inside - The New York Times
OAKLAND, Calif. — A Twitter hacking scheme that targeted political, corporate and cultural elites this week began with a teasing message between two hackers late Tuesday on the online messaging platform Discord.
"yoo bro," wrote a user named "Kirk," according to a screenshot of the conversation shared with The New York Times. "i work at twitter / don't show this to anyone / seriously."
He then demonstrated that he could take control of valuable Twitter accounts — the sort of thing that would require insider access to the company's computer network.
Hackers exploited Tor exit relays to generate bitcoin: research
The unidentified attacker likely used those Tor "exit relays" — the IP addresses through which Tor traffic passes — to manipulate the traffic and mine cryptocurrency, said the researcher, who goes by nusenu. How much bitcoin the attackers were able to generate, if any, remains unclear.
"So far, 2020 is probably the worst year in terms of malicious Tor exit relay activity since I started monitoring it about five years ago," nusenu wrote in an Aug. 9 Medium post . "It demonstrates once more that current checks are insufficient to prevent such large-scale attacks."
Decrypted: How a teenager hacked Twitter, Garmin’s ransomware aftermath – TechCrunch
A 17-year-old Florida teenager is accused of perpetrating one of the year’s biggest and most high-profile hacks: Twitter.
A federal 30-count indictment filed in Tampa said Graham Ivan Clark used a phone spearphishing attack to pivot through multiple layers of Twitter’s security and bypassed its two-factor authentication to gain access to an internal “admin” tool that let the hacker take over any account.
It was, by all accounts, a sophisticated attack that required technical skills and an ability to trick and deceive to pull off the scam. Some security professionals were impressed, comparing the attack to one that had the finesse and professionalism of a well-resourced nation-state attacker.
Quite a lot has been going on:

Hackers are defacing Reddit with pro-Trump messages | ZDNet
A massive hack has hit Reddit today after tens of Reddit channels have been hacked and defaced to show messages in support of Donald Trump's reelection campaign.

Blackbaud blocked the intruders, Jakubowski noted, and removed them from their system, but not before donor information had been accessed.
