NASA Challenge Seeks Way to Harvest Water on Moon and Mars | Digital Trends

Humans are returning to the moon in the near future, and we could be on our way to Mars before too long, as well.

But for missions aimed at creating bases where we can stay for extended periods of time, we need a way to harvest any available water for drinking, growing plants, or making rocket fuel.

With this in mind, NASA is launching a new challenge for university-level engineering students to design and build hardware capable of identifying, mapping, and drilling through various subsurface layers before extracting water from a block of ice in a simulated testbed.

What to Expect From 2020's Halloween Blue Moon

Now in a perfect world, a blue moon would most likely mean that the moon appears blue during the night. That’s usually not the case, unfortunately. A moon isn’t considered a “blue moon” because of its color, but rather when it occurs.

As you may already know, full moons typically occur once a month. When 13 fulls moons occur in one year instead of 12, that means you’ve got a blue moon (and its uncommon nature is the basis for the phrase "once in a blue moon.).

'Aroma sculptor' sets out to build scent of the moon

He may never have pulled on a spacesuit or flown in a shuttle but that has not stopped Frenchman Michael Moisseeff from reaching for the stars.

After years of exploring and reconstructing the scents of planet Earth, the 66-year-old "aroma sculptor" has set himself a new goal, capturing the smell of the moon.

Moisseeff, with his floral shirt and a head of white hair tied up at the back, straddles the line between artist and scientist as he moves purposefully around the thousands of vials that make up his laboratory.

Lava Tubes on the Moon and Mars are Really, Really Big.

Could lava tubes on the Moon and Mars play a role in establishing a human presence on those worlds? Possibly, according to a team of researchers. Their new study shows that lunar and Martian lava tubes might be enormous, and easily large enough to accommodate a base.

Both the Moon and Mars were volcanically active at one time, and all that activity has left its mark on both worlds. Mars hosts the largest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons, as well as numerous lava tubes. The Moon has no volcanoes, but orbiters have spotted lava tubes on the surface. And those tubes are attracting more and more attention, as future plans for a habitat of some sort on both worlds are taking shape.

Scientists Have Been Sending Signals to The Moon. They Finally Got One Back

When NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter ( LRO ) arrived in orbit around the Moon in 2009, scientists immediately started firing lasers at it.

More specifically, they were firing lasers at a small reflector array roughly the size of a paperback book, trying to bounce light back to Earth. And after almost 10 years, they have finally succeeded.

It's the first time photons have been successfully reflected back to Earth from a lunar orbiter. And it not only gives us a new way to perform measurements of and around the Moon - it can help us understand the conditions on the lunar surface that could be degrading instruments placed there over 50 years ago.

This Halloween Will See A Rare Blue Moon | PEOPLE.com

On Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, the night sky will be lit up by a rare full blue moon. The celestial phenomenon can either occur when there are two full moons in a single calendar month (a monthly blue moon), or when it’s the third or fourth full moon in a single season (a seasonal blue moon), according to Earth Sky .

The upcoming blue moon will be a monthly one, and it's a pretty rare occurrence as a full moon typically occurs every 29 days, so there's usually only one full moon per month.
