Jupiter and Saturn to form the first visible “double planet” in 800 years

Jupiter and Saturn to form the first visible "double planet" in 800 years

(CBS)-Jupiter and Saturn will be so close that they will appear to form a "double planet." The great conjunction, as the planetary alignment has come to be known, hasn't occurred in nearly 800 years.

When their orbits align every 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn get extremely close to one another. This occurs because Jupiter orbits the sun every 12 years, while Saturn's orbit takes 30 years every couple of decades, Jupiter laps Saturn, according to  NASA .

Trump Orders Space Force to Discover Other Planets with Courts | The New Yorker

WASHINGTON ( The Borowitz Report )—In a sign that he is not ready to give up his legal challenge to the 2020 election, Donald J. Trump has ordered the United States Space Force to discover other planets that have courts.

With his legal options on this planet dwindling, Trump is placing all of his hopes on identifying another planet that might have intergalactic jurisdiction over Earth.

On the heels of his Space Force announcement, astronomers expressed deep skepticism that a planet with a functioning legal system could be located before the Electoral College casts its votes on Monday.

Jupiter and Saturn in planetary conjunction give astronomers in Philly a sense of childlike awe

Arcing high in the heavens above a raging virus, searing-tweet politics, and whatever may be going on with Carson Wentz, a cosmic tango is developing for all the Earth to see.

There in the southwestern sky at twilight, Jupiter and Saturn appear to be quitting their orbits and speeding toward one another like lovers in the starlight to form what almost looks like a super planet.

What he means is it's easy to see with the naked eye. You'll notice two points of light within kissing distance of each other from around 5:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in roughly the same spot on the horizon where the sun sets. This will be visible from now until Dec. 21.

Powerful electrical events quickly alter surface chemistry on Mars and other planetary bodies

Newswise — Thinking like Earthlings may have caused scientists to overlook the electrochemical effects of Martian dust storms.

On Earth, dust particles are viewed mainly in terms of their physical effects, like erosion. But, in exotic locales from Mars to Venus to Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, electrical effects can affect the chemical composition of a planetary body’s surface and atmosphere in a relatively short time, according to new research from Washington University in St. Louis.

Planet Fitness Needs to Flatten More Curves - WSJ

Yet, while many large and small competitors were pushed into bankruptcy by the pandemic, Planet Fitness somehow gained all the weight back, and then some. Its shares on Monday morning were trading 8% higher than a year ago. That makes no sense.

Planet Fitness has a clever business model that has helped it grow rapidly, but certain elements of it backfired recently. Charging very little and deliberately making it difficult to cancel, its best customers rarely show up but keep paying anyway. Its gyms couldn't fit them all at once if they did. Even so, turnover is high enough to require constant recruitment of new members by its mostly franchisee-owned stores.

Jupiter and Saturn Will Form a 'Double Planet' in the Sky | PEOPLE.com

According to Popular Mechanics, Saturn and Jupiter will appear to be on top of each other in the western sky, creating what will look like a double planet on Dec. 21.

"Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to one another," Patrick Hartigan, professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University in Houston, Texas, told The Tribune .

French NGOs fight media company's trademark on word 'planet'

Powerful French entertainment company Canal Plus trademarked the term in France, but environmental groups are pushing back, saying they should be allowed to use the word "planet" to promote their projects to save it. Multiple cases are under examination by France's intellectual property regulator INPI, including one coming to a head this week.

The head of environmental group Planete Amazone, Gert-Peter Bruch, thought it was a hoax when he first received a mail from Canal Plus claiming ownership of the planet brand.
