How to build your own DIY orbiting camera rig with a twist - DIY Photography

Sometimes, you just need a spinning camera that orbits around your subject for a video. There are many really fancy, expensive, customised and automated rigs out there that will let you do this costing a whole lot of money. But sometimes, you just want to go the DIY route with grip gear that you possibly already own.

As explained in the video, the rig was made from a couple of c-stands, steel tubes, corner brackets, clamps and other grip gear allowing them to safely rotate a camera over the head of a seated subject. It lets them start the camera at one side of the shot, rotate it over the subject and end on the other side while keeping their main subject in the centre of the frame the whole time.

Astronauts ring in new year from space with zero gravity 2021 ball drop | Space

The people of Earth rang in the year 2021 with fireworks and social distancing amid the global coronavirus pandemic last night. Even astronauts in space found a way to celebrate in their own unique way: a ball drop in zero gravity .

"We wanted to take a moment to wish all of you a very happy New Year," NASA astronaut Kate Rubins said in the video, which NASA released on YouTube .

"One of the most famous New Year's Eve traditions is watching the ball drop in Times Square in New York City," NASA astronaut Victor Glover added, referring to the iconic celebration in which thousands of revelers pack New York City's Times Square to watch a glittering ball drop at midnight to mark the new year.

400 million km within 163 days, China's Mars probe heads for Red Planet : The Tribune India

China's first Mars exploration mission Tianwen-1 travelled more than 400 million km by Sunday morning and is expected to enter Mars orbit next month, the country's space agency said.

So far, the Mars probe had flown in space for 163 days. It was about 130 million km from Earth and about 8.3 million km from Mars, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

According to the CNSA, the probe is functioning stably and is scheduled to slow down before entering Mars orbit in more than a month and preparing itself to land on the Red Planet.

2020 science highlights in radio astronomy

The year 2020 may have been stinktacular terribleness in many ways, but it wasn't all stinktacular.

For radio astronomy, there were a lot of really important achievements scientifically. I am mindful this comes on the heels of the collapse of the Arecibo radio telescope , so 2020 managed to impinge even here. However, quite a lot of very cool science was achieved at observatories such as the Very Large Array (VLA), the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).

Sunday: It may not feel like it, but yesterday the Earth was at its closest distance to the sun. Now the Earth will begin movie further away from the sun. All the planets in our solar system have elliptical orbits, but some planet's orbits are more circular than others. For the Earth the difference between perihelion and aphelion is about 3 percent. This is like the difference between a 57-yard field goal and a 59-yard field goal.

Monday: The Quadrantids are not as popular a meteor shower as the Perseids or Leonids, but this shower usually puts on consistent displays from year to year. The radiant, the point in the sky where the meteors will appear, rises shortly before midnight and is surrounded by the constellations Ursa Major, Boötes, Hercules, and Draco. The gibbous moon does provide some interference this year, blocking the fainter meteors from being seen.

How This Incredible Advert Was Shot Using a DIY Orbiting Camera Rig | Fstoppers

Sometimes you need to ensure that you set your shots apart from the norm, which is easier said than done. Well, this is one example that really achieved what it set out to do!

In this video by studio, Threefold , they set about creating an advert for a planner. After deciding that the usual, top-down flat lay image wasn't going to have the impact they wanted, they build a makeshift orbital rig to mimic the look of a page being turned in the planner. Perhaps I've seen this effect before, but even if I have, this is one of the most impressive versions of it.

Japan Sending Wood Satellite Into Space: History of Wood in Space

That's nearly all we know about the mission. Neither entity has released specific details about the project, such as how long the mission will last, what they hope to do in orbit, or even the type of wood they'll be testing.

The team also hopes to study the growth of treated wood in microgravity in an effort to better inform its practical uses of the material on Earth, but few details are given in the Nikkei Asia report about what these experiments might look like.

Scientists solve mystery of an unidentified object caught in Earth's orbit - Orlando Sentinel

NASA space scientists have identified a previously "unidentified object" orbiting near Earth as a relic of past space exploration.

Researchers at the Pan-STARRS1 survey telescope on Maui, while looking for asteroids, noticed the near-Earth object in September. But the NEO captivated their interest as to what the object could be due to its size and unusual orbit. The mystery was studied by observatories all over the world, according to a NASA press release.
