China to launch a pair of spacecraft towards the edge of the solar system - SpaceNews

HELSINKI — China is developing a mission to send a pair of spacecraft to study the far reaches of the solar system and reach interstellar space by mid-century.

The project aims to send separate spacecraft to the nose and tail of the heliosphere, a region of space dominated by solar wind created by our Sun, to study distinct areas of this bubble and how it interacts with the interstellar medium.

Wu Weiren, a senior figure in China’s lunar exploration project, told official industry newspaper China Space News Friday that scientists are working on an implementation plan for the mission.

Wiggly signal hints of an aurora on a planet far from the Solar System : Research Highlights

Jupiter's aurora glows blue in this composite image. A newly detected radio signal might be the signature of a similar aurora on a planet in another solar system. Credit: NASA/ESA/J. Nichols, Univ. Leicester

Radio astronomers might have spotted the strongest hint yet that a planet outside the Solar System has auroras similar to Earth's Northern Lights.

Joseph Callingham at the Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands and his collaborators sifted through data from a sky survey by the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), a gigantic array of antennas in northern Europe. To their surprise, the team found several sources of circularly polarized radiation, meaning that the radio signal's electric fields spiralled like a corkscrew as it travelled across space.

Utah Skies: Moons Of Our Solar System | UPR Utah Public Radio

April 7, 2021, just before sunrise, Saturn, Jupiter, and a crescent Moon will be visible in the east southeast. The highest bright object is Saturn. Saturn has 82 known moons. Saturn has the most moons in the Solar System. Titan, the second largest moon in the Solar System, is Saturn's largest moon. It is usually far enough away from Saturn that it is easy to see in most telescopes. In larger telescopes you may even see the smaller moon Rhea.

Moving toward the horizon the brightest object is Jupiter. Jupiter has 79 known moons. The four larger moons of Jupiter are known as the Galilean Moons. Galileo was the first to see these four moons in 1610. He recognized that the moons were satellites of Jupiter and named them. They are named Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Ganymede is the largest moon in the Solar System and only slightly larger than Titan.

Planet Nine May Be a Tiny Black Hole in Our Solar System | IE

There's a growing consensus among astronomers that beyond the gas giants of the outer solar system lurks a mysterious object — perhaps a black hole — influencing the massive cloud of small, icy bodies in the Oort cloud .

And it turns out there is some evidence to suggest this hypothesis might be right. No one is sure how a planet massive enough to affect the cloud of icy leftovers from the solar system's birth could form at such a great distance from the sun. "All we know is that there's an object of a certain mass out there," said Theorist Jakub Scholtz of the U.K.'s Durham University, in a New Scientist report . "The observations we have can't tell us what that object is."

Interstellar Comet is One of the Most Unusual Objects to Visit Our Solar System - ScienceBlog.com

A team of scientists, including a researcher with the University of Central Florida and Arecibo Observatory, has discovered that a rare, interstellar comet may be one of the most pristine objects ever documented to have visited our solar system.

Such a "pristine" interstellar comet, or one that has never passed near a sun, is of interest to scientists because it could offer insight into the material makeup of a solar system different than ours. The results were published recently in the journal Nature Communications .

NASA will pay Elon Musk's SpaceX $2.9 billion to build a lunar landing system to ferry astronauts to the surface of the moon.

SpaceX was one of three companies chosen last year to develop technology for NASA's Human Landing System program. On Friday NASA announced SpaceX's "Starship" design had beat out the other two companies for the contract.

Before-and-after of asteroid Bennu's sample site | Space | EarthSky

During its final flyby this month, the spacecraft OSIRIS-REx took an image of the location where it collected a sample from asteroid Bennu’s surface. It’ll return to Earth 2 years from now, providing scientists with clues to the creation of our solar system.

As it made its final flyover of asteroid Bennu on April 7, 2021, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft peered down to capture an image of the aftermath of its encounter with the asteroid, late last year. On its YouTube page, NASA compared the mark left by OSIRIS-REx on Bennu to “boot prints on the moon.
