A soon-to-be-released government report on unexplained aerial phenomena finds no proof of extraterrestrial activity, but cannot provide a definitive explanation for scores of incidents in which strange objects have been spotted in the sky, officials said on Thursday.
The findings of the report, due to be provided to Congress by the director of national intelligence as soon as this month, will offer no firm conclusions about what the objects — repeatedly detected by military pilots and others in recent years — might be, according to two officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to address a document that is not yet public.
US UFO-report boldly goes where no one has gone before | Science| In-depth reporting on science
A task force will share data it collected on unusual flight phenomena with Congress, as UFO enthusiasts rejoice. But a German expert with decades of research under his belt doesn't believe aliens have ever been to Earth.
If you have an interest in UFOs (unidentified flying objects, for the uninitiated) and have always wondered what exactly the US government and intelligence services know about them, June may be a big month for you.
NASA will head to Venus for first time in over 30 years | National Geographic
NASA had a surprise in store for planetary scientists today: During a "State of NASA" briefing, the agency announced that roiling, toxic Venus will be the target of the next two missions in its highly competitive Discovery program.
"These two sister missions, both aimed to understand how Venus became an inferno-like world capable of melting lead at the surface—they will offer the entire science community the chance to investigate a planet we haven't been to in more than 30 years," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said during the briefing. "We hope these missions will help further our understanding of how Earth evolved and why it's currently habitable, when other [rocky planets] in our solar system are not."

The interview was fascinating, particularly its final exchange, when Cuomo asked the two men what they thought could explain a number of recently declassified incidents in which US Navy fighter pilots encountered and tracked strange, cylindrical objects—often described as "Tic Tacs"—across the sky.
"There's no scientific reason or basis to doubt that possibility," replied Mellon, as calmly as if he were commenting on gravity. "That's a hypothesis that could explain the facts. People need to be open to that. We're spending billions looking for extraterrestrial civilizations. We've got spacecraft that have already left the solar system. It's possible that someone found us before we found them."
Pentagon UFO report raises questions about aliens: What scientists say
"The report on the unidentified aerial phenomena is really important because these certainly are things people have seen," Conselice said. "It's extremely unlikely, I think, that it's aliens visiting Earth, though that is the most exciting theory of course."
Conselice said he suspects the reports amount to "strange reflections" or "atmospheric phenomenons."
Just because these objects are unidentified, it's "an unwarranted leap" to think that aliens are involved, said Adam Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Rochester.
AP sources: US report makes no definitive finding about UFOs
The two officials were not authorized to discuss the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Findings of the report were first published Thursday by The New York Times.
Congress in December required the Director of National Intelligence to summarize and report on the U.S. government's knowledge of unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs — better known to the public as unidentified flying objects or UFOs. The effort has included officials on a Defense Department UAP task force established last year. The expected public release of an unclassified version of the report this month will amount to a status report, not the final word, according to one official.

Almost 35 years later, Wytheville UFO mystery remains | WFXRtv
In fact, the small town has had thousands of UFO sightings — instances where residents looked up at the sky and saw flying saucers. Some objects were reported to have mysterious patterns of lights, while others were said to have glided by without a sound.
"There's always been little, what you say, town secrets and things that never really made sense," said Danny Gordon, a resident of Wytheville.
Creative Thinking in both Science and the Arts Is Not for the Faint of Heart - Scientific American
Over the past few months, I’ve been invited to speak with well-known writers, musicians and film producers regarding my recent book, Extraterrestrial . Prior to these conversations, I was on the receiving (and admiring) end of their artistic work, but now they were curious about my own research as a scientist. These exchanges led me to recognize the similarities between innovation in the arts and the sciences.
Just like aging wine, a product of creative work acquires quality over time. It is colored by the response of the audience as well as by imitations. The initial circumstances are reminiscent of an admirable infant. It is fascinating for a scientist or an artist to watch the interaction of their creation with the world, just as it is for parents to watch their children.
