UK meteorite contains material from the dawn of the solar system | Metro News

Meteorite enthusiasts told of their joy at finding a rock from the outer asteroid belt – containing materials from the dawn of the Solar System 4.6 billion years ago.

After a six second fireball raced through the sky above Britain on February 28 , a global effort went into narrowing down the exact landing area for fragments of meteorite it shot into the sky.

Data was analysed in Australia to narrow down the search which identified Winchcombe, Glos, in the Cotswolds, as the likely landing place.

IN YOUR CORNER: Veteran faces steep bills after going solar | KFOR.com Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY ( KFOR ) — Solar energy can be a cost effective measure for many Oklahoma families, but one local veteran says his solar dreams have become a nightmare.

“I thought, well let's just get solar,” he said. “I can run the hot tub, pool, and I don't have to care.”

His dream of solar started with a phone call. The company was named Solergy, and they sold a sweet deal.

XL Solar Partners installing 250-kW PV project atop Houston office building

XL Solar Partners is installing a commercial rooftop solar system with the FR8T Yard, a commercial office building located at 4245 Richmond Avenue in Houston, Texas. The project ranks among Houston's largest commercial solar installations inside the 610 Loop.

XL Solar, a Houston-based full-service solar energy system provider, designed the 250 kW solar system with high-efficiency modules to maximize power generation on the project's constrained land area.

"It's encouraging to watch solar energy catching on for commercial uses in Houston," said Larry Atherton, president of the FR8T Yard development. "For years, homeowners realized benefit of solar to lower energy costs and help the environment, and we hope our system will inspire other businesses to install rooftop solar systems. This project represents a giant step toward becoming a net-zero carbon facility, and we look forward to decades of environmental stewardship with our tenants."

Why NASA needs to return to a moon they haven't visited in 35 years

On January 24, 1986 , NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Uranus , getting as close as 50,600 miles to the ice giant and its 27 moons.

"We were in the classroom watching these images come down," Hofstadter tells Inverse. "And as soon as we saw the first images of [Uranus' moon] Miranda, my professor jumped on the table and yelled, 'What is that?'"

Since then, Hofstadter, who is now a planetary scientist at JPL, has been fascinated by the moons of Uranus, advocating for a return mission to explore their subsurface oceans, geological activity, and unusual composition.

Discovery: Study involving Indian origin scientist finds graphene in two meteorites | Technology

In 2008, a team of scientists from Nasa’s Johnson Space Center and the Carnegie Institution of Washington discovered whisker-shaped graphite embedded in two distinct meteorites that contained minerals older than the planets in this solar system.

Graphene is the thinnest slice possible of graphite. It is two-dimensional, exceptionally light, transparent, flexible, has tremendous physical strength, and extraordinary electronic properties. The excitement surrounding graphene has only soared to dizzying heights since Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for finding a method to isolate it.

Arizona's Meteor Crater – Scientific Insights From "Young" and Well-Preserved

The “young” and well-preserved crater helps scientists understand cratering processes on Earth and elsewhere in the solar system.

Most asteroids that survive an encounter with Earth’s atmosphere ultimately plummet into water, simply because oceans cover 70 percent of the planet. But massive space rocks occasionally hit land. That was the case 50,000 years ago when an iron asteroid smashed into North America and left a gaping hole in what is today northern Arizona.

Asteroid KT1, large as the Space Needle, misses Earth by 4.5 million miles

A "potentially hazardous" asteroid as big as Seattle's Space Needle  flew within 4½ million miles of Earth early Tuesday, the largest of several asteroids expected near us this week.

While there was no real danger to Earth, KT1 was in a class of asteroids with " potential to make threatening close approaches " to Earth, says the Center for Near Earth Object Studies , a part of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
