This asteroid sample could reveal our solar system's origin story | News | henryherald.com

Just over a year after Japan's Hayabusa2 mission returned the first subsurface sample of an asteroid to Earth , scientists have determined that the near-Earth asteroid Ryugu is a pristine remnant from the formation of our solar system.

This was the first material to be returned to Earth from a carbon-rich asteroid. These asteroids can reveal how our cosmic corner of the universe was formed.

Catch a glimpse of Comet Leonard before it leaves the solar system | KJZZ

If you've looked up in the sky at the right time and in the right direction over the last 10 days, you may have gotten a glimpse of the Comet Leonard, which is named after University of Arizona research specialist Gregory Leonard.

Leonard first discovered the comet, also known as Comet C/2021 A1, nearly a year ago — somewhat accidentally — as part of the Catalina Sky Survey project. Here's how he describes it.

Listen: NASA probe captures "wild" sounds from the Solar System's largest moon

NASA's Juno spacecraft recently made a close pass by the largest moon in the solar system, and it came away with a unique — and eerie — souvenir.

As Juno zipped by Jupiter's moon Ganymede , it tuned its radio and plasma instruments to the icy satellite. Pitch-shifted into audible frequencies, the result is an audible account of the spacecraft's journey and a valuable trove of data on the moon's properties.

What Is a Comet? | NASA Space Place – NASA Science for Kids

Comets, such as the comet ISON pictured here, are thought to hold material from the time when the Sun and planets were forming. They are like giant, frozen time capsules in our solar system. Credit: NASA/MSFC/Aaron Kingery

Comets are mostly found way out in the solar system. Some exist in a wide disk beyond the orbit of Neptune called the Kuiper Belt . We call these short-period comets . They take less than 200 years to orbit the Sun.

How NASA's Psyche Mission Will Explore an Unexplored World

This illustration depicts the 140-mile-wide (226-kilometer-wide) asteroid Psyche, the target of NASA's mission of the same name. Based on data obtained from Earth, scientists believe the asteroid is a mixture of metal and rock.

Launching in August 2022 and arriving at the asteroid belt in 2026, NASA's Psyche spacecraft will orbit a world we can barely pinpoint from Earth and have never visited.

Lucy in the sky with asteroids: Planetary astronomers on team supporting first NASA mission to

On Oct. 16, NASA launched the Lucy probe, starting its 12-year journey to the Trojan asteroids near the planet Jupiter in the outer solar system.

Expected to begin reaching its targets in 2027, the probe will fly by more asteroids than any other spacecraft in history, including one in the "main belt" between Mars and Jupiter and eight Trojan asteroids—Donaldjohanson, Eurybates, Queta, Polymele, Leucus, Orus, Patroclus and Menoetius.
