Six Planets are Retrograde, What Does that Mean for You? | Discovery

Solar system planets set. The Sun and planets in a row on universe stars and lines of gravity background. Elements of this image furnished by NASA.

All the planets of the solar system orbit around the Sun in the same direction. From our vantage point on the Earth, this makes them appear to march across the sky from season to season in the same direction.

Ask Astro: Why are planets and stars round? | Astronomy.com

Small celestial bodies, like comets or dwarf planets, can sometimes have bizarre shapes — just look at ‘Oumuamua, the interstellar visitor whose strange, elongated form sparked endless theories as it passed through our solar system.

No matter how irregularly shaped an object is, its self-gravity pulls equally in all directions.

Earth is 'well-hidden' from extraterrestrial civilizations hunting for habitable planets – ...

When looking for potentially inhabited planets beyond the solar system, astronomers have a variety of tools at their disposal. As it stands, by far the most successful of these has been the transit technique, which has made about 75% of all the exoplanet discoveries so far.

The transit method, however, has its weaknesses; the principal one being that transits only occur for the small fraction of planets whose orbital planes are almost exactly edge-on to Earth.

Why Does Uranus Spin On Its Side? - WorldAtlas

At first glance, the planet Uranus does not look like much. The planet's atmosphere is rather devoid of any visible features, and when compared to the other giant planets of our solar system , Uranus looks boring.

As of yet, the most likely explanation for the strange rotation of Uranus is that it was impacted by an Earth-sized planet around three to four billion years ago. Although our solar system contains eight planets now, things were not always this way.

THE NIGHT SKY OVER SAUK COUNTY COLUMN: Three bright planets, meteors, and Starlink

Saturn, Jupiter and Mars are the planets to watch in the evening sky in October. With darkness arriving earlier as winter nears, we have more hours in the evening with which to gaze at the stars. The summer constellations and center of the Milky Way set together in the hours after sunset.

All the planets are strung in a line across the southern horizon. The first one you'll notice as the sky grows dark is the brightest of the planets visible right now—Jupiter. Jupiter is in the constellation Pisces and gets a visit from the nearly full moon on the Oct. 7 and 8.

Bad Astronomy | Super-Earth exoplanet with one-day orbit | SYFY WIRE

The star is called WASP-132 . It's about 400 light-years from us, and is slightly smaller, cooler, and lower mass than the Sun.

WASP-132 c is bigger than Earth, but not too much so: It's about 1.85 times Earth's diameter, so we call it a super-Earth. We don't know much else about the planet itself except that its mass must be less than about 37 times the mass of Earth, which doesn't constrain things much.
