Direct observations of a complex coronal web uncover an important clue as to what mechanism drives ...

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have traditionally concerned themselves with other things than the sun.

Over the years, the original configuration has been expanded to include newer satellites. The three most recent ones currently operating are additionally equipped with instruments that look at the sun for space weather forecasting. They can image ultraviolet radiation from our star's corona .

25 photos of space that could change the way you see our universe and make you feel very small

Let's start close to home. Even here, you can see that space is huge — bigger than you probably realize. That's Earth on the right, and the moon is the tiny speck on the left.

Mars: A world that might have been, now stripped by a solar wind - Coast Reporter

Mars is this month’s big deal. Its motion through the stars stopped on Oct. 30 and became retrograde motion as Earth began to overtake it prior to opposition. As a result, Mars moved westward from above Betelgeuse in Orion to closer to Aldebaran in Taurus.

Mars begins December at magnitude -1.8 and its disc at its maximum of 17.2” (arc-seconds). Its closest approach occurs at 18:00 on Nov. 30, although its exact opposition (to the sun) occurs on Dec. 7 at 22:00. (All times are Pacific Standard.
