Hoik Jang stopped at the headline on his Google News feed: Two defunct satellites were at risk of colliding some 559 miles above Pittsburgh, potentially increasing low-Earth-orbit space junk by 30 percent.
But, Jang thought after reading the January article, the close call validated the project the Rice University graduate student and 19 others had proposed to NASA. They want to launch a tissue-box-size research satellite to study how the sun affects satellites orbiting the Earth in hopes of better tracking and projecting their paths.

Russia has launched another GLONASS-M satellite, according to Roscosmos , the Russian State Space Corporation.
A Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle successfully carried the satellite to its planned orbit from the Plesetsk cosmodrome. The launch took place on schedule on March 16.
Ground-based facilities of the G.S. Titov Space Forces VKS immediately took control of the satellite. A stable telemetry connection has been established and maintained with the satellite. The onboard systems of the spacecraft are operating normally.

An aerospace startup that plans to launch thousands of satellite "cell towers" into space says it has successfully sent a text message to a common Android smartphone using one of its satellites in orbit. The company claims it's the first time a text message has ever been sent to an unmodified mobile phone from space, and it demonstrates the technology needed to provide global cellphone connectivity from orbit.
"No one ever in human history has used a satellite to send a message directly to an unmodified mobile phone on the ground," Charles Miller, co-founder and CEO of Lynk, tells The Verge . In order to get service from a satellite now, people have to either buy a specialized satellite phone or purchase an accessory that allows a typical smartphone to connect to a vehicle in orbit.
NASA Detects 59-Foot Asteroid That Will Intersect Earth's Orbit Tomorrow
NASA's asteroid tracking system is currently monitoring an approaching space rock that will intersect Earth's orbit tomorrow. According to the data collected by the agency, the incoming asteroid is as big as the space rock that caused a powerful mid-air explosion over Russia in 2013.
The approaching asteroid has been identified by NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies as 2020 FN . This asteroid measures about 59 feet, making it almost as long as a standard bowling lane.
