I have never much liked our New Year’s Eve celebrations. The new year is supposed to be a time of renewal and rebirth, but the middle of winter seems a poor time to do it.
Earth’s orbit around the sun roughly determines the length of the year. However, there is no magic tick mark on Earth’s orbit to indicate when the new year begins. Our choice of Jan. 1 is purely arbitrary.
On the other hand, the phases of the moon clearly — albeit roughly — articulate the passage of a “moonth.” (Hey, where do you think the word “month” comes from?) That’s why our first human ancestors measured the long-term passage of time in months, not years.
Other things to check out:
Athens 'Moon Tree' came from 1971 Apollo 14 seeds
Back in 1976, the Athens Banner-Herald reported on the planting of a "Moon Tree" that "may rival" the city's legendary Tree That Owns Itself.

The tree — a loblolly pine grown from a seed that circled the moon during the Apollo 14 moon mission — was planted in 1976 by the Sertoma Club as part of the nation's bicentennial celebration. A marker designating the tree was installed, but it disappeared over time. Soon, the tree and its legacy were forgotten.
Lockheed Martin-Built Orion Spacecraft is Ready for its Moon Mission
"Orion is a unique and impressive spacecraft and the team did an outstanding job to get us to this day," said Mike Hawes , Orion vice president and program manager for Lockheed Martin. "The launch and flight of Artemis I will be an impressive sight, but more importantly it will confirm Orion is ready to safely carry humans to the Moon and back home. This tremendous advancement opens the door to a new era of deep space exploration that will ultimately benefit us back here on Earth."
Apollo landers, Neil Armstrong's bootprint and other human artifacts on Moon officially protected
Michelle L.D. Hanlon is affiliated with For All Moonkind, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to protect each of the six human lunar landing and similar sites in outer space as part of our common human heritage.

On Dec. 31, the One Small Step to Protect Human Heritage in Space Act became law. As far as laws go, it's pretty benign. It requires companies that are working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on lunar missions to agree to be bound by otherwise unenforceable guidelines intended to protect American landing sites on the Moon. That's a pretty small pool of affected entities.
Quite a lot has been going on:
Moon Sign Astrology: What Your Moon Sign Means
The moon is a moody luminary, endlessly pregnant. In myths across continents, she embodies the divine mother: as the Greek goddess, Selene, with 50 daughters; as Luna, her Roman counterpart; as Abuk, the Dinka goddess of women and gardens; as Ala, an Odinani alusi that shrouds dead souls inside her sacred womb.
The moon is also one of the fastest-moving bodies on an astrology chart. She changes signs every few days , and runs through the whole zodiac wheel every month. She's one of the reasons astrologers and natal-chart calculators fixate on exact birth times: A few hours can make a dramatic difference between a moon in Pisces or a moon in Aries.
New moon 2021: when is the new moon in January, what does it mean and date of the next one | The
A new moon will be present in the night's sky tonight (13 January) - though it might not be visible from Earth.
New moons signal the end of one lunar cycle and the beginning of another, occurring around every 29.5 days as the moon goes through eight different phases and appearances.
They also symbolise new beginnings and encourage people to reflect on past achievements, start fresh projects and use the moon's energy to achieve their own goals.
Weather Tidbits: Cold Moon - 47abc
The last full moon of 2020 is explored in this Weather Tidbits. The December full moon is known as the Cold Moon. It’s called the Cold Moon, due to the cold weather finally gripping us, now that winter is in full swing. It’s also called the Long Night Moon, due to the moon traveling its most northerly trajectory in the sky but also its longest moonlight of the year. This moon differs from the other full moons of the year, in that its best viewed during moonrise.
Astronomy 2021: The biggest events including a super moon lunar eclipse
If it is, Front Range residents will be treated to a very special lunar eclipse appearing to hang just above the mountains as part of a confluence of events that figures to be the highlight of the celestial calendar for 2021.
First of all, the moon will be full, and it will be a “super moon.” That means the moon will be closer to the earth — just over 222,000 miles away — than for any other full moon this year. And remember, the moon always looks bigger when it is rising and setting than it does when it’s overhead. (Scientists tell us that is just an optical illusion, but it sure is a convincing one.)
