On Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates became just the fifth nation to successfully send a spacecraft to Mars when its robotic probe, named Hope, began orbiting the red planet.
Success!
Contact with #HopeProbe has been established again.
The Mars Orbit Insertion is now complete. #ArabsToMars
It is the first interplanetary mission undertaken by an Arab country. In recent days, a number of prominent buildings and monuments in the wealthy oil country, which is about the size of Maine, were lit up at night in red in honor of Mars, the red planet.
Not to change the topic here:
Happy Martian new year! The Red Planet turns 36 | Space
Yesterday (Feb. 7) marked the beginning of a new year on the Red Planet . While a year on Earth lasts 365 days, every Mars year lasts 668 sols (Mars days) — or 687 Earth days, as each sol lasts a little longer than an Earth day at 24 hours and 39 minutes. Because the Red Planet takes almost twice as long to orbit the sun as Earth, on Mars, you would celebrate your birthday every 23 Earth months.
* * *
This is now "Mars Year 36" on Mars as tracked by humans on Earth. "Mars Year 1" began after a significant dust storm was detected in 1956, named "the great dust storm of 1956." To calculate how old you would be on Mars, you can divide your age by 1.88 (but take note: traveling to Mars wouldn't actually make you younger).
Six Alien Planets Have Been Found Locked in a Rare, Complex Orbital Dance
Such a dance is called a chain of resonance, and it's only rarely seen. But it can reveal something about how planetary systems form.
Orbital resonances aren't uncommon. Basically, they mean that the orbital periods of two bodies can be described as a ratio.
A few examples can be found in the Solar System. There's Pluto and Neptune - for every two orbits of Pluto around the Sun, Neptune goes around thrice; that's a 2:3 resonance. And three moons of Jupiter are in a resonance chain. For every one orbit of Ganymede, Europa goes around twice and Io four times; that's a 1:2:4 resonance.
'Chain of resonance': Six alien planets with rhythmic movement are locked in a rare
According to the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, the system could provide important clues about how planets, including those in the Solar System, form and evolve
Six exoplanets with rhythmic movement in a planetary system 200-light years away have been found in a rare orbital dance known as the chain of resonance.
The first time the team observed TOI-178, a star some 200 light-years away in the constellation of Sculptor, they thought they had spotted two planets going around it in the same orbit. However, a closer look revealed something entirely different.
Quite a lot has been going on:
New Cryogenic Camera To Capture Planets Outside Solar System | IE
NIX, as the camera system is called, has infrared and cryogenic capabilities, which will enable it to capture the most high-contrast imagery of such planets to date.
NIX has been built at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's now been provisionally accepted by the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Germany, where all the different parts of the Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS) are being put together. NIX is the imager "I" in ERIS.
