HANOVER, N.H. - February 12, 2021 - A newly discovered planetary system will provide researchers with the rare chance to study a group of growing planets, according to research co-led by Dartmouth.

The new system, named TOI 451, is made up of at least three neighboring planets that orbit the same sun. The planets range in size between that of Earth and Neptune.

Most water is either frozen, locked up in comets, on vast ice sheets blanketing frigid worlds or trapped in a gas, evaporated by the intense heat pumped out by stars. Liquid water is exceedingly rare, found only in certain special circumstances.

One of those certain special situations is the state that Earth has found itself in. Our home planet is not too far from the sun for its water to turn to ice, and it's not too close that it gets blasted into gas. Earth is at just the right distance from the sun to allow for liquid water to remain on its surface.

Alkali Metals from Rocky Planets Found in Atmospheres of Nearby White Dwarfs | Astronomy |

Astronomers have detected lithium in the atmospheres of four cool and old white dwarfs, of which one also displayed atmospheric potassium. The relative abundances of these two alkali elements with respect to sodium and calcium strongly suggest that all four stars have accreted fragments of rocky planets similar to Earth and Mars.

“Rogue planets” in the Milky Way | WGN-TV

I have recently heard about “rogue planets” wandering through the Solar System. What is the story?

Dear Ingred,
One hundred billion, perhaps more, so called “rogue planets” may be wandering through the Milky Way (not the Solar System). Most planets (like the Earth) revolve around stars (the way Earth revolves around the sun), but many other planets wander freely through space and are not bound to a star.
