The observatory's hilltop dome is open, etching a glowing amber crescent into the autumn darkness. Inside stands a telescope that will help me see Mars as it appeared to observers more than a century ago, when eager astronomers used this instrument in 1877 to confirm the discovery of the two tiny Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos .

China's Tianwen-1 Mars probe captures epic video of Red Planet during orbital arrival | Space

China has released epic video footage from the country's Tianwen-1 spacecraft as it made a close approach to Mars after reaching the Red Planet this week.

Tianwen-1 arrived at Mars on Wednesday (Feb. 10) and fired its engines to allow it to enter orbit around the planet. China has now received and put together a series of images taken during this approach and created two remarkable scenes, seen here in a single video .

One video, taken by Tianwen-1's small engineering survey sub-system camera for monitoring a solar array, shows Mars entering into frame followed by an incredible view of the edge of Mars' atmosphere, or "atmospheric limb."

Both the UAE and China are newcomers at Mars, where more than half of Earth's emissaries have failed. China's first Mars mission, a joint effort with Russia in 2011, never made it past Earth's orbit.

"We are quite excited as engineers and scientists, at the same time quite stressed and happy, worried, scared," said Omran Sharaf, project manager for the UAE.

All three spacecraft rocketed away within days of one another last July, during an Earth-to-Mars launch window that occurs only every two years. That's why their arrivals are also close together.

New discoveries, stunning images from Mars deepen understanding of red planet | CTV News

TORONTO -- Stunning new images of deep canyons and spidery frost deposits on Mars, plus new gassy discoveries, are rocking the science world in a month already full of red planet news.

This past summer, three new Mars expeditions began -- a new NASA rover, China's first rover, and an orbiter from the United Arab Emirates -- two of which arrived at the planet earlier this week, with the NASA rover set to touch down later this month.

In 2016, the European Space Agency's ExoMars programme launched the Trace Gas Orbiter, armed with a camera called "CaSSIS" and a host of scientific instruments that help it search for trace gases to better understand the planet's atmospheric makeup.

How Old is the Ice at Mars' North Pole? - Universe Today

On Earth, the study of ice core samples is one of many methods scientists use to reconstruct the history of our past climate change. The same is true of Mars’ northern polar ice cap, which is made up of many layers of frozen water that have accumulated over eons. The study of these layers could provide scientists with a better understanding of how the Martian climate changed over time.

This remains a challenge since the only way we are able to study the Martian polar ice caps right now is from orbit. Luckily, a team of researchers from UC Boulder was able to use data obtained by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to chart how the northern polar ice caps’ evolved over the past few million years.
