Giant 'survivor' planet found orbiting dead star | Space | EarthSky

For the first time, astronomers have detected a planet orbiting a white dwarf star. If further confirmed, the discovery shows that some planets could survive the destruction of their sun-like stars, and some might even remain potentially habitable.

Here we report the observation of a giant planet candidate transiting the white dwarf WD 1856+534 (TIC 267574918) every 1.4 days. We observed and modeled the periodic dimming of the white dwarf caused by the planet candidate passing in front of the star in its orbit. The planet candidate is roughly the same size as Jupiter and is no more than 14 times as massive (with 95% confidence).

First Possible 'Survivor' Planet Orbiting White Dwarf Star Found By NASA's TESS and Spitzer

Using data from NASA missions, an international team of astronomers has found what may be the first intact planet orbiting a white dwarf, the dense leftover of a Sun-like star, only 40 per cent larger than Earth.

The Jupiter-size object, called WD 1856 b, is about seven times larger than the white dwarf, named WD 1856+534. It circles this stellar cinder every 34 hours, more than 60 times faster than Mercury orbits our Sun.

"WD 1856 b somehow got very close to its white dwarf and managed to stay in one piece," said lead researcher Andrew Vanderburg, Assistant Professor of Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US.

An international team of astronomers utilizing NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and data obtained from the now-retired Spitzer space telescope have reported an astounding potential discovery of a surviving planet closely orbiting a white dwarf.

So what's the big deal? Scientists have found many exoplanets in close orbits of their parent stars.

Here's the confusing part: The way a white dwarf is created destroys nearby objects either by incineration or gravitational destruction.

Massive exoplanet found orbiting dwarf star, gives crucial insight for Sun's fate | Technology

According to the research paper published in the journal 'Nature' a massive newly found Exoplanet has been observed orbiting the white dwarf star. The planet is 80 light-years away in the constellation of Draco while the white dwarf star is 82 light-years away from the Earth.

An Exoplanet is a that planet which orbits any star except the sun. Chandrayaan-2 Successfully Completes One Year of Orbiting the Moon | The Weather Channel

It is one year since India's second moon spacecraft Chandrayaan-2 was inserted into the lunar orbit, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on Thursday. The Indian space agency said Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft/orbiter was launched on July 22, 2019 and inserted into lunar orbit on August 20, 2019.

Though the soft-landing attempt of the lander Vikram was not successful, the orbiter, which was equipped with eight scientific instruments, was successfully placed in lunar orbit.
