“It is a whole new world”: scientists detect mysterious black hole - The Hindu

Scientists announced on Wednesday the discovery of a black hole — the oldest ever detected — that shouldn't even exist according to the current understanding of cosmic monsters so dense not even light can escape their gravitational pull.

Born of a merger between two other black holes, GW190521 weighs in at 142 times the mass of our Sun and is the first "intermediate mass" black hole ever observed, two consortiums of some 1,500 scientists reported in a pair of studies.

The creation of a massive black hole, with a mass 142 times greater than the Sun, has been detected after two medium-sized black holes collided 7 billion years ago.

The largest known black hole collision was recorded while an international consortium of astronomers, including 16 from the Warsaw University Observatory and National Centre for Nuclear Research, were examining gravitational waves and detected four short wiggles passing through the Earth.

Could a Black Hole Defy the Laws of Physics?

What do you know about black holes? Only what you learned in school? Well, get ready for some additional education because an old theory by Albert Einstein has just been proven about the weird dark stars in the universe.

Way back in the early 20th century (1916 to be exact), as part of his general theory of relativity, Einstein developed a theory about something called gravitational waves. In a nutshell, gravitational waves are what happens when two black holes collide with each other and cause a change in the curve of space-time.

Fireworks in Lok Sabha as opposition & Modi govt lock horns on 'black hole' PM-CARES

New Delhi: There was high-voltage drama in the Lok Sabha Saturday as the opposition parties criticised the constitution of the PM-CARES fund for Covid-19, terming it a "black hole" and questioning the tax breaks and CSR tag given for donations to it.

The Modi government hit back by alleging that the Nehru-era Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) — another fund to be tapped for emergencies — has been misused by the Congress' Gandhi family.

'Stupendously large' black holes could grow to truly monstrous sizes | Space

How big might black holes get? A team of scientists now suggests black holes could reach what they call "stupendously large" sizes, each harboring the mass of 100 billion suns or more.

Discovering such gargantuan black holes may shed light on the nature of a significant fraction of the mysterious dark matter that makes up four-fifths of the matter in the universe, the researchers said.

At the centers of most, if not all, galaxies are supermassive black holes with masses that are millions to billions of times that of Earth's sun. For instance, at the heart of our Milky Way galaxy lies Sagittarius A*, which is about 4.5 million solar masses in size.
