Chinese rocket's uncontrolled landing near the Maldives highlights the need to mitigate a larger space debris issue.
Solar-powered rover, named Zhurong, will now survey the landing site before departing platform to conduct inspections.
The Zhurong is expected to spend about three months on the planet to study its surface soil and atmosphere.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) captured a dramatic image last month of Curiosity ascending Mont Mercou , a landform on the slopes of the Red Planet's 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) Mount Sharp.
In September 2014, Curiosity reached the foothills of Mount Sharp, which rises high into the Martian sky from Gale's center. The rover has been climbing the mountain ever since, examining the layered rock deposits for clues about Mars' long-ago transition from a relatively warm and wet world to the cold desert planet that it is today.

Besides adding more evidence to the idea that there once was organic matter on Mars, directly detecting organic salts would also support modern-day Martian habitability, given that on Earth, some organisms can use organic salts, such as oxalates and acetates, for energy.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has revealed the first images from Mars taken by its Zhurong rover, which arrived on the planet's surface on Saturday. Scientists say that the shots — which show the rover with its solar panels unfurled and the ramp from its lander deployed — hint that it has arrived at a safe, ideal site from which it can begin exploring.

A strange consequence of Lynn Rothschild's current research is that she ends up snapping photos of the more exotic mushroom offerings she encounters in the grocery store's produce aisle.
Rothschild's contribution to the program's portfolio ? Building habitats and other space infrastructure on site from fungi. "I just never thought that I'd be pitching mushrooms to NASA," Rothschild told Space.com.
"You don't want — I mean, I guess maybe you do want mushrooms growing on your table, but you don't want necessarily a habitat that suddenly has mushrooms popping out all over the place," she said. "So it's worth making sure you've got a strain of fungus that's happy to grow without producing mushrooms.

My planning day here on Earth started with a computer that wouldn’t react to anything just 3 minutes before I had to call in… While terrestrial computer problems are usually being solvable by switch it off and on again, recovering on Mars takes just a little longer.
As before, if the rover finds itself on the same parking spot, the science team develops ideas what to do, and often those are building on the ideas developed in the last planning session, observations that came second in a close race to the front runner of the last plan, and new ideas from the data already received.
Plans Underway for Ingenuity's Sixth Flight - NASA Mars
Plans are underway for NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter to make its sixth flight on the Red Planet in the next week. The flight is the first to be executed during the helicopter's operations demonstration phase and includes scouting multiple surface features from the air and landing at a different airfield. In this new phase, data and images from the flight will be returned to Earth in the days following the flight.
Ingenuity's flight plan begins with the helicopter ascending to 33 feet (10 meters), then heading southwest for about 492 feet (150 meters). When it achieves that distance, the rotorcraft will begin acquiring color imagery of an area of interest as it translates to the south about 50-66 feet (15-20 meters). Stereo imagery of the sand ripples and outcrops of bright rocks at the site will help demonstrate the value of an aerial perspective for future missions.

Penguins Mars and Rover get new home in Cincinnati Zoo's Roo Valley
Two 4-month-old little blue penguin ambassadors have found a new home in the Cincinnati Zoo's Roo Valley.
Mars and Rover hatched Jan. 13 and 14, respectively. They were the first zoo babies for the zoo in 2021.
"Mars and Rover hatched one day apart and have been raised together and introduced to the same things at the same time," said bird team head keeper Rickey Kinley.
The pair were hand-raised and now take their place in the colony of other little blue penguins in Roo Valley.
